NAPIER, Last Night. “This is verging upon defiance ot the award and the Act. It amounts to gross carelessness and has caused con siderable trouble to the department, although all the cases do not come before the Court." Thus the Inspector ol Awards, Mr H. Sherning, in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning, ns he prosecuted Mary Waugh, licensee ot the Clarendon Hotel, Napier, for breaches of the Hotel Workers’ Award in respect of two employees. Penalties of £3 and £4 respectively were imposed by Mr J. Miller, g.M. Mr Sherning said the action was foi the breach of the Hotel Worker* Award. A worker had come down irom Wairoa to a position ct the defendant's hotel, and when he had arrived was refused the position and another man engaged. He was thus entitled to two days' pay and his travelling expenses. Liability was admitted for the do fendants by Mr M. L. Gleeson. In another action ngains the defendant, tho department alleged that a maid had been employed at the work of «• general and not paid the higher rat«*. In a third claim, a half-day had not been given in the week in which it wo* due. “This will be a last warning," said the Bench in imposing the penalties Defendant was also fined 10/- and costs for failing to pay overtime.
