Chinese Advance 75 Miles in Ten Days DICTATORIAL POWERS FOR KAI-SHEK Catted Frtu Auociauon —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7.10 pan. SHANGHAI, April 2. A Hankow report says that in order to ensure unified leadership in the prosecution of the war a Kuomintang Congress endowed Marshal Chiang Kai-shek with dictatorial powers. The threat of a return of warfare to the Shanghai area is growing. Wounded Japanese are arriving in the city daily, and it is j reported that the battlefront is only 60 miles away, the Chinese having advanced 75 miles in ten days. BRITISH SUBJECTS ASSAULTED Two British subjects, Messrs. W. M. Monk and C. J. Dosremedios, were hauled from a stationary motor-car, kicked and punched and bitten by two Japanese civilians inside the Japanesecontrolled section of the Settlement. The British Consulate-General is investigating. Accusing Brigadier-General TelfcrSmollett of discourtesy, prejudice and unfriendliness, the Japanese military authorities have rejected the British protest against the behaviour of the Japanese military police. The British military authorities in Shanghai strongly protested to the Japanese Commander-in-Chief, General Shunrutu Hata, against the recent behaviour of the Japanese military police, who continue to threaten officers and sentries with firearms at the British defence sector. Britons have been instructed in the future to take suitable action in the event of being struck or threatened.
