Bush Schools’ Sports

HUKANUI CHAMPIONS All records went by the board at Eketahuna on Saturday when the Bush Primary Schools’ Sports Association held their seventh annual fixture. From an early hour cars and motor lorries from all points of the compass converged at the local domain, and in the afternoon more interested sightseers arrived, bringing the gross takings up to record proportions. The weather being much warmer and with an absence of rain which marked the previous function, the refreshment stall was in great demand throughout the day, resulting in an increased turnover for which Mesdamcs R. Mabey (Hamua) and E. C. Harrington (Kakariki) and the Misses Mabey and Harrington with Mr. H. Brookes (Newman) deserved great thanks. The championship cup was won by Hukanui (their first win), the junior championship by Ballance (last year’s champions) and the Badger relay cup (presented for the first time) was annexed by Hukanui. At approximately 10.30 all the 21 schools paraded with their respective banners, led off by the Ballauco School to a stirring march jriayed on the public address system. Then the youngsters lined up to hear a lew "words of welcome by the president, Mr. R. Mabey. A stop was made for lunch at noon when all the flat races with thoir innumerable heats, were concluded, which was indicative of really smart work by the officials. In the afternoon relay races, boys’ jumping and girls’ basketball throwing proved very interesting to a greatly augmented crowd. It w r as particularly pleasing to see the advancement shown by the small Ngaturi School which recorded a formidable number of points. Equally gratifying was the increased entry from neighbouring schools—Mangamaire, Mangahao and Kaitawa being the newsomers. The president, after apologising for the absence of the Mayor (Mr. W. Simpson), thanked all those who had been connected with the fixture, especially Mr. Badger for presenting the relay cup. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., said lie was very impressed w'ith the way the children contested the events. Colonel T. W. McDonald, a member of the Wairarapa ward of the Wellington Education Board, expressed pleasure at being present, and congratulated the children on their performances. Mr. E. P. Badger, for whom three cheers were given, said he was glad to be among the children, adding that the way the sports had been run at Mangatainoka the previous meeting had decided him to give the cup. Mr. Dyer, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, laughingly said he hoped the garden party he had missed at Lower Hutt to be present that day would not cost him his scat on the board. He apologised for tho absence of Mr. A. Donald, another board member from Wairarapa, and added at tribute to the children on Iheir fine behaviour and athletic prowess. He then presented tho trophies won. In conclusion, Mr. R. Mabey referred to tho part played by the secretary, Mr. R. G. McKenzie, the speaker remarking that a gathering of such magnitude would not be possible were it not for the tremendous amount of work put in by the latter. He hoped that their secretary would not be lost to them, and said it was up to the Ballance people to keep the grade of their school up to do so. The officials were:—President, Mr. R. Mabey (Hamua); vice-president, Mr. H. Harrington (Kakariki); hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. G.
