Oratory and Laughing Lass St. Leger a Two-Horse Race ' Comrtcraft was Scratched The autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was opened at Trentham to-day in overcast, but fine and warm, weather. The track was in excellent order and the going was fast. Both the gates and totalisator showed a satisfactory increase over the corresponding day last year, when the weather was unfavourable. An inquiry was held after the running of the Thompson Handicap into the check met by Stretto and it was found to have been accidental, no action being taken. The totalisator handled £41,602 (win £18,637, place £22,965), representing an increase of £13,403 10s over the total for the first day last year.

Stable Double AWAPUNI SUCCESS ORATORY AND LAUGHING LASS ROYAL CHIEF'S ST. LEGER (Special to ‘‘Times. ”) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Pleasant conditions prevailed for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. Tho course was fast, hut in good order. ! A feature of the results was the success of Mr. T. A. Duncan’s | horses, Oratory and Laughing Lass, in the two chief handicap events, the Thompson and the Railway. | Both are trained at Awapnni by L. G. Morris. Royal Chief comfortably beat The Crooner in the St. Leger, and Defaulter proved to be the best of the two-year-olds. Big Dividend in Highweight. The Napier winner Charade was made a solid favourite for the Rimu Highweight Handicap, but she was beaten soon after entering the straight. Taumau made the early running, followed along the back by Southern Blood and Charade. Southern Blood ran up to ..m leader just before entering the straight, and dashed to the front as soon as heads were turned for home. Charade and Camilla Horn quickly challenged, but Charade could not come on. Camilla Horn finished too well for Southern Blood and beat him by half a neck, while Lustral came from the back to finish third just ahead of Charade. Spender was next. Charade, Spender and Lustral might improve through the race. The winner paid a big dividend. Trial Platers. Kindly led the Trial Plate field to the straight and drawing away looked likely to win till Jewish Lad came at her with' a well sustained lato run which brought him home a winner by half a length. These two were well clear of the others, Twilight Song, who was third, being five lengths away. Settlement was fourth and Autosweep fifth. Kindly ought to be a better horse next time up. Inheritance, who was well fancied, ran very badly. The field was a very weak one. Royal Chief’s St. Leger. Courtcraft having developed leg trouble was withdrawn from the New Zealand- St. Leger and as Mahutai also defected the only runners were Royal Chief and The Crooner. Both were backed to less than even money and Royal Chief was a decided favourite. The Crooner went away smartly and soon established a lead of half-a-dozen lengths, but as Royal Chief warmed up ho hit out splendidly and trailing The Crooner to the straight had the race in hand a long way from home. Ranging alongside The Crooner below the distance he came on nicely to beat nun by half a length, which margin he could have increased. During tho race The Crooner displayed a tendency to hang out and when he returned to the birdcage he was lame. A Good Contest. The Pacific Handicap, for two-year-olds, produced a good contest and a close finish. Spendthrift, Rakahanga, Russian Ballet and Rarotonga were the leaders nearing the straight, with Defaulter and Sudan nicely placed behind them. When Russian Ballet ran out a little coming on to the course proper Defaulter came through. He had to be hard ridden to head Rakahanga, and then withstood challenges by Sudan and Good Passage to win by half a length from Good Passage, who beat Suuan by a head. Rakahanga was fourth followed by Dunmanway, Drachma and Spendthrift. The winner scored meritoriously, but Good Passage was unlucky coming from a long way back and displaying a lot of speed. Rakahanga and Sudan ran good races. Won all the Way. A big field of good quality contested the Thompson Handicap. Most of the •horses who were well fancied before the day of the race drew wide marbles, but Oratory drew No. 1 and made excellent use of it. Oratory jumped away smartly and led from Francis Drake, soon to be closely followed Jby Stretto, Sulieman, Lining and Paper Slipper. Nearing tho straight Oratory -was still clear of Sulieman, with Whirling, Francis Drake and Stretto next. She was three lengths clear at the false rail and there B. H. Morris drew the whip. He kept her right up to her work and she passed the post a winner by three and a-half lengths from Smoke Screen, who finished well and beat Stretto by a length. Sulieman did best of tho others, and next -came Francis Drake, Catalogue, Dictate and Whirling. Natural speed and a favourable draw were factors in .Oratory’s success. The field soon became strung out and many bettors realised early in the piece that their chances were negligible. Smoke Screen finished on well enough to be kept in mind for immediate engagements. Francis Drake looked well but left the impression that he would be the better for the race. Sulieman found

BIG TEAMS ARE NECESSARY. In America horses competing at meetings are stabffed on the courses, and at'the commencement of this year the joint accommodation at Tropical Park and Hialeah ' (Miami. Florida) was insufficient for all the horses that owners wish to compete. Although 1707 horses were stabled at Tropical Park and Hialeah, applications for that many more were turned down. The 1707 made the largest quota ever quartered in Florida. With racing day after day on dirt tracks, big teams are necessary for trainers to sec the Tropical Park and Hilaleah meetings right through. DOPING DECLINES IN AMERICA. Doping would appear to be as nearly as possible dead in America. At the annual conference of National Association of State Racing Commissioners at Miami (Florida) in January, reports from 13 States showed that last year 9956 samples of saliva were analysed, and only nine showed definite indications of doping. Five others were doubtful. The samples were taken on 1241 days. Sponging—that is, putting a sponge in one of the nostrils of a horse—now appears to be practised to a greater extent than doping.

The southerner Valmarch endeavoured to lead all the way in the Tinakori Handicap, but Sigurd beat him nicejv at the finish. Majority, Nightcalin and Sigurd were handy nearing the straight and Bluffer behind these. Sigurd wore Valmarch down and won by half a length, whilo Relative, Bluffer, Alloa and Rockingham were next. Sigurd paid a long price. Laughing Lass’ Sprint. Beginning brilliantly Laughing Lass led all the way in the Railway Handicap. She was followed on to the course proper by Alunga, Myriam, Lady Ina and Triune. Laughing Lass withstood all challenges to win well by a little more than a length from Grey Honour and Alunga, who dead-heated for second and just beat Brunhild and Lady Ina. The four who finished behind Laughing Lass were almost in line. Grey Honour behaved badly at the barrier and eventually got away badly. In the circumstances he ran a great race. The Hack Mile. In the Silverstream Handicap High Test, Copy Cat, Seyfried, Accomplice, Galteemore and Ruinette were prominent in the run to the straight. Accomplice finished well to win by half a length from Galteemore, who seemed unlucky. Ruinette was a fair third, Trebor . fourth, then llias and Conveyer. : Conveyer drew wide at the barrier and | never looked dangerous.
