The appointment of Mr. R. J. Avery, of the Wellington City Council Traffic Department, us chief traffic inspector to the Dunedin City Council was confirmed at the fortnightly meeting of the council. The King has approved the promotion of Mr. Ronald i. Campbell, a counsellor in his Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, to the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary and his appointment in that capacity to his Majesty’s Embassy at Paris, succeeding Mr. Hugh Lloyd Thomas. Mr. S. E. West, who was formerly on the engineering staff of the Hamilton Borough Council, and who has been in charge of the eoDctruetion of a large gold dredge in tlie West Coast, has been appointed assistant engineer to the Greymouth Borough Council.

Mrs. K. Luxford, of Weld street, Feilding, who was accompanied by her son John, has returned home after visiting Wellington to say good-bye to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Williamson, of Waituna, on their departure for a holiday visit to England.

Mr. N. J. Ellison, bacteriologist, and Mr. VV. Brinsley, registrar of the Hastings Memorial Hospital, tendered their resignations at the meetiug of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board. Members spoke iu eulogistic terms of the services of the two,men while in the employ of the board. The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Lavage) has announced that Sir Walter Carncross has been reappointed for a further seven years as a member of the Legislative Council. Sir Walter was first called to the Council in March, 1903, and has sat continuously ever since. He has been Speaker since November 1, 1918.—Press Assn. Constable P. E. H. Alsop, who is at present in charge of the arms office at the Palmerston North Police Station, has been promoted to the rank oi sergeant and will leave on transfer to Wellington next week. He has been at Palmerston North for about five years, for two of which he was attached to the detective branch, after coming from Wellington, and for the remainder of the time in his present position. Mrs J. Livingston, Dannevirkc, will leave Auckland by the Awatea to-day for Australia. While in Sydney she will be tho official delegate from the New Zealand Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union to the international peace conference, to be held from April 5 to April 10. Mr Livingston, who will accompany his wife, is attached to the Farmers* Union delegation to the British Empire primary producers* conference to be held in Sydney shortly. They intend to be away about six weeks. Mr P. V. Burns, of Palmerston North, has been advised that he lias been appointed electrical inspector for the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board. He is to reside in Waipukurau and will commence his duties there on March 28. Mr Burns has been a member of the City Council electricity department’s staff for 14 years, since the inception of the department. He was chairman of the liokowhitu School Committee for a number of years and a member of the Central School committee for a period, president for a term of the board of management of the Friendly Societies’ Dispensary and the Friendly Societies’ Hospital Association, while ho is secretary and treasurer of the Manawatu and District Electricians’ Association.
