Women’s Institutes

RONGOTEA A meeting of the new committee of the Kongotea Women's Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs McKay presiding. The vice-president for the coming year are Mesdamcs Bower and Churchill, while Mrs T. Collins was unanimously re-elected secretary. A full discussion ensued in connection with the formation of a ‘‘Box Group" or Groups in the Institute, worked in conjunction with the course mapped out by Miss Johnson of Massey College. A complete list of the boxes available was consulted and the committee were of opinion that it would be most interesting and instructive to go into the matter fully. It was agreed to put the matter before the members at the next riionthly meeting. The April meeting will be an interesting one, particularly as Mrs Dafter Senr. is to give a talk on the early history of New Zealand. In accordance with the wish of the Provincial Executive, the committee decided to take the subject of “Nutrition" as their Golden Thread for the next six months, Mrs W. A. Churchill to give the first talk at the April meeting. The competition for the meeting will be for. a plate of live wliolemeai scones, and members are asked particularly to take notice that there will be a sixpenny bring and buy stall, the proceeds of which are to be used towards the expenses of the delegate to the Dominion Conference. The hostesses are as follows:—Mesdamcs Barker, Friedrich and Jessop and the Misses L. Davis and E. Knight.

LINTON At the annual meeting Mrs Harrison presided over a good attendance. The secretary, Mrs Young, read the balancesheet which showed a favourable financial position. Mrs Schwabe w T as welcomed as a possible new member. It w r as decided to send a delegation to the annual conference in Wellington in July. Mrs Harrison thanked her committee for the support given her during her term of office, special thanks being due to the secretary, Mrs Young. Mrs Harrison did not seek re-election. Mrs D. Currin was elected president. Mrs Algio and Mrs T. D. Lynch vicepresidents, Miss Y r oung, secretary, (reelected), Mesdames Terry, Gilliland, Moyes, A. Curreu, Bowler, Quarterly, Hillas, Walerseu committee, there being no ballot required in both cases. It was decided to hold a Whist Drive the second Wednesday in April to celebrate the seventh birthday. The next garden circle meeting is to be held at Mrs M.cNahou’s on March JO. The committee acted as hostesses and served afternoon tea. The competition was for dahlias and was kindly judged by Mrs SchwUbc and Mrs J. Nash. Mrs Moyes I, Mrs Heard 2, and Mrs Mullins 3. LONGBURN. The annual meeting of the Longburu Women's Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Fletcher presiding. The secretary, Mrs Stevensen, read the annual report which disclosed a successful year's activities. The nominations not exceeding the required number for the committee, the following were declared elected:—President, Mrs Murray; secretary, Mrs J. Martin; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Holland and Maule; committee, Mesdames TV Rowland, E. Jackson, G. Chamberlain and Attic. The points’ prize for the year was won by Mrs Holland with Mrs T. Rowland second and Mrs W. Hill third. A competition for the bcsS bottled fruit was won by Mrs Rowland with Mrs Murray second and for the best bloom Mrs Rowland was first with Mrs Stevensen second. Mrs W. Fletcher and Mrs Steveusen were chosen as delegates to attend the conference in Wellington. Afternoon :a was served by the hostesses. PAPATAWA | The annual meeting of the Papatawa Women’s Institute was held on Friday, March 11. There was a large attendance and the retiring president, Mrs. Dickins, expressed he pleasure in seeing so many members present. A comprehensive report was read by the secretary, Mrs. Munro, and in moving the adoption of the report, Mrs. Dickins thanked all members for the wonderful help she had had from them during the year. There had been three rather big events during the year, the jubilee, halfyearly council meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation and the Christmas party for the Papatawa and Maharahara Institutes’ children. In the lirst of these events, the members of the women's institute had co-operated with the school committee and residents of the district and the results achieved had been highly satisfactory. Mrs. Dickins paid a tribute to the untiriug efforts of Mrs] Munro, the retiring secretary. Mrs. Munro had had about seven years committee work and as she was leaving the district in May, there could not be any chance of calling in her again to take up (ho secretarial work. Mr Munro would bo very much missed and the president wished her good luck and health in the future. The two treasurers, Mrs. Glcadow and Miss Bradley, were also thanked for their good work during the yer.r. The balance-sheet was then presented and a creditable balance was shown. At this juncture, Mrs. L. Gleadow, on behalf of tho members, presented Mrs. Munro and Mrs. Dickins with a beautiful crystal vase each as tokens of appreciation of their past services. Both these members suitably responded. Mrs. Dickens then asked Mrs Nixon to ad-. dress the meeting. Mrs Nixon spoke on the work of the officers of the women's institute and stressed the importance of having a good working committee and a good leader and how necessary it was for all the members to take their turn on the committee. She cited her own experiences as president and treasurer and secretary and as a result of her talk it did not seem a difficult matter to obtain a committee. Mrs. Dickins then vacated the chair and Mrs. R. Cunningham was .appointed chairman for the afternoon. Nominations were then received for committee and president and Mrs. E. Martin was elected president. She has with her a very strong committee. Mrs. Gleadow and Miss Bradley were appointed as delegates to the S.H.B. annual meeting at Otane in April. Mrs. Gardiner, of Wellington, delighted the company with two songs, “Trees" and “Friend o’ M* ," the accompaniments being played by Mrs. J. S. Nelson. There were a good number of entries in the competition for the day which was: —Seniors: A vegetable bouquet—won by Mrs. R. Bradley. Juniors: A vegetable bouquet—won by , Mrs R. Bradley. Afternoon tea was then served by the retiring committee and a pleasant afternoon was brought to a close. UTUWAL At the annual meeting Mrs A. N. Roberts presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs W. G. Short and Mrs Barnicoat, federation secretary and treasurer, were present and .were heartily welcomed. Annual meetings both of the federation and of the Dominion council were discussed. The members were unanimous in wishing to send a delegate to the Dominion Conference in July, Mrs A. N. Roberts being nominated. An appeal ivas made to members to take “Homo and Country." Miss J. Roberts was appointed as the agent for the magazine. Miss M. Foot gave a very interesting reading on {Shetland wool. The trading stall was well stocked with produce and well patronized and was in charge of Misses O. Hemmings and A. Wingate. The steward for the coming year being Mrs Adlington. The competitions for the afternoon were in tho hands of Mrs. Flavall, the steward for the coming year being Miss M. Harkness. Apologies wert received from Mesdames J. M. O'Hagan and N. J. Viles. Miss J. Roberts, the secretary, gave a very full

account of the year's work, specially mentioning all who had helped in various ways to make it such a happy one. The prtsident thanked all who had assisted throughout the year, particularly tho secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Hirschbcrg, in a neat little speech, eulogised the work of the retiring committee. Miss J. Roberts gave special thanks to the president for the harmonious working during the year. The president, in reply, thanked all for their loyal co-operation, which had made her work comparatively easy and the year ; very pleasant. Mrs. W. G. Short spoke • in appreciative terms of the splendid report and complimented members on the good use made of local talent. The t balance-sheet read by Mrs. Foot showed a very comfortable credit balance. Mrs. Barnicoat offered congratulations, saying that it indicated careful handling of tho funds and that the institute had fullilled its obligations. It also showed that members had been very helpful and responsive when called upon. Mrs. Barnicoat then took the cliair and inspired members with her talk, “The Interest of the Institute." As there was an election, Mrs. Barnicoat and Mrs. Short acted as tellers. The new committee is as follows:—Mesdames Adlington, Enright, Foot, Flavall, Hirsehberg, McEwen, O’Hagan and A. Roberts and Misses M. Harkness and J. Roberts. Mrs. A. Roberts, president, Mrs. Flavall and Mrs. Hirsehberg, vicepresidents, were accorded musical honours. Miss J. Roberts and Mrs. Foot consented to continue as secretary and treasurer for a further year. The visitors were presented with dainty shoulder sprays by Mrs. Wingate and the officers received pretty posies from Mrs. T. Searle, these floral tributes being the work of Misses J. Searle and M. Harkness, Mrs. {Short gave a very interesting display of Christmas novelties. The articles were so varied and useful that members will most likely begin to prepare for next Christmas immediately. Mrs. Wingate graciously thanked Mrs. Short and Mrs. Barnicoat for the wonderful assistance given as well as judging and demonstrating. Musical honours followed. The competitions resulted:—Seven-aud-sixpence dress, Mrs. A. Roberts I. Mrs. Billett and Miss Harkness equal 2, Mrs. A. Coup 3, tho judging of which

caused much amusement. Blooms, Mrs. W. Roberts 1, Mrs. Wingate 2, Miss M. Harkness 3. A prize was offered by Mrs.' Enright for the most entries in

the premier bloom section and by Mrs. A. Roberts for most entries and no place at the cud of the year in the points section. A short committee meeting was held, at which the following programme was arranged for April:— Roll-call, S O S calls (a member to ask for advice or a hint on something she would like to know); Golden Thread talk, Mrs. Flavall, nutrition; demonstration ou pewter work, Miss Smith; competition, premier bloom, and sponge kisses (cream; social half-hour, Lower Piripiri. Hostesses, Mrs. Forbes, Mrs. O'Hagan and Miss Harkness. Members are to bring potatoes to April meeting. A dance is being arranged for the coming Friday. TE ARAKURA. At the annual meeting Mrs E. H. llaythorne presided over a very good attendance. The president, in her annual report, thanked her committee, aud the members for their very willing help aud loyalty. It had been very heartening to stand side by side with so many willing workers she said. She thanked those who had contributed articles for the exhibits at the Palmerston North Winter Show and the recent Feilding Show. A motion of condolence with Mesdames W. E. Thomas, P. B. Danielson, J. Fitzgerald and D. McDowall, avlio had suffered family bereavements, was passed. The financial statement presented by Miss M. E. Hansen (hon. see.) showed a satisfactory credit balance. Mrs A. Griffith moved a vote of thanks to the president and secretary for the able way they had both carried out their duties. Fourteen were nominated for committee and the following were elected:—Mrs H. M. Whisker, Miss M. E . Hansen, Mesdames A. Griffith, F. M. Bradley, W. E. Thomas, P. B. Danielson, F. J. Russel], E. H. Haythorne, B. Burnham, H. Swainson and G. Sanne. There were three nominations for the office of president and Mrs F. M. Bradley was elected. Mesdamcs F. M. Bradley and 11. M. Whisker were chosen as delegates to attend the annual council meeting in Palmerston North. Two new junior members Misses Olive Thomas and Pamela Haythorne, were elected. During tho afternoon Mrs F. M. Bradley read a paper (by Mr A. K. Wilkinson) on the Bell bird. A telegram competition was won by Mrs E. S. Baker and Misses Joyce Bennett and Josie Bradley tied in a guessing competition. The blooms for the month, results were-.—Zinnia, Mrs Bradley; aster, Mrs D. McDowall; marigold, Mrs F, J. Russell; plum jam, Mrs P. B. Danielson 1, Mrs E. H. Haythorne 2, Mrs D. McDowall 3. Aflernooh tea was dispensed by Mesdamcs B. Burnham, Bradley, Stewart and Misses M. and J. Burnham, and a well tilled stall was attended by Mrs D. Lcwer. NIREAHA. The Nireaha Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting oil March Ist, Mrs Hawkins presiding over a very good attendance. Competitions for the mouth were as follow: Best bloom, Mrs Petersen 1, Mrs Wilkins 2, Mrs Hawkins 3. Best three potatoes, Mrs F. Hansen 1, Miss Drysdale 2, Mrs Wilkins 3. Cheese straws, Miss Drysdale and Mrs Thomasen .1, Mrs J. Drysdale 3. £fter afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Terry aud Thomasen, the annual meeting was held. Mrs Brookes read thy balance-sheet and report on the year's working. Mrs AVilkins congratulated the president, secretary and committee on such a satisfactory report and healthy balance-sheet. Mrs Petersen eulogised the services of the retiring president and secretary, Mesdames Hawkins and Brookes, respectively, who were not seeking re-elec-tion. The officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —President, Mrs Petersen; vice-presidents, Mesdames Mason, and Haw'kius. lion, secretary, Mrs Wilkins; committee, Mesdames Brookes, Blevvett, Duncan, Mills, Stewart and Miss Drysdale. At the first meeting of the newly formed committee four new members . were welcomed Mesdamcs Vincent, 1 McAvoy, Hiddleston, and Cronin. . Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Thurston, Cronin, ,• Fraser aud Mason. Mrs Ernest Petty , was unanimously elected secretary, and , Mrs H. Thurston treasurer. The re--3 mils for the forthcoming conference in . Wellington were considered, and it was . decided to send amendment to two of . them. Owing to there being so much . change in the programme when it is mude for a year, it was decided not to have a printed programme, but to ar* . range for the committee to meet the . last Tuesday in every quarter aud make up the demonstrations and competitions for three months at a time, it was thought also that more business could be dealt with by tho committee . and thus leave more time iu the monthly meeting for social activities. A concert and dance to be held on April 12, was arranged for, and tho programme was left in the capable hands of Mesdames Baker, P. Simpson and J. Simpson. An iced cuke will be competed for. Mrs Petty submitted a report of the progress of the singing circle, aud it is pleasing to uoto that under the tuition of Mr Garde-Grimshaw a notable improvement has been made. Sixteen members have enrolled iu this circle, and it is now expected that they will be able to finance themselves, although it is considered desirable that all music should be bought by the Institute aud thus become au asset. Mrs Heayns generously offered to donate a points prize for the competitions in handcrafts, and Mrs P. K. Simpson foi the flowers, both prizes to be presented at the end of the year. Mrs Hcayn? also is giving three tea-towels aud Mrs Wilton another three, and Mrs Wilton kindly offered to take charge of these and see to washing, etc. It was with great pleasure that members were reminded that Mr L. J. Wild will be present at the April meeting, and address the members. The competition will be for a bottle of tomato sauce, and the flower comx>etitiou for French marigolds and asters. Misses Amer, Davy, and Mesdames Baker and Mrs Huddleston will be the hostesses. SHANNON Shannon AV.I. is to be congratulated on gaining two coveted trophies during the past year. Firstly, the ‘‘Silver Spoon." An award decided at the annual council meeting given for the besj; effort made during the year. Shannon's effort w r as considered the best aud took the form of an early settlers' re-union. The second award was decided at the group rally' - held at Lintou recently. This competition was open to members of the Foxtou, Opiki, Linton, Tokomaru and Shannon Institutes and the subject of the competition was a “presentation box." Mrs Aim's entry was judged as the best aud so she obtained the Horowlienua Banner for Shannon. The box was made of celophanc and tied with ribbon thus enabling the flower.; inside to be seen without lifting the lid Preparations are well in hand for the birthday party' which takes place this w'eek. Members will regret to learn that owing to illness, a valuable worker, Mrs J. T. Bo vis, will be unable to assist for awhile, she is at present the guest of her aunt, Mrs Knight, Levin; while undergoing special treatment. All will wish her a speedy return to health.
