\?TFE WITNESSES TRAGEDY Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, Last Night. Mr. G. H. Smith, a sawmiller, aged 45, was drowned in the Bay of Islands during the week-end. Deceased left in a launch with a party on a fishing expedition and the launch anchored near the Black Bock, but a swell caused the vessel to drag her anchor, and she was partly driven on to a submerged rock. Mr. Smith was thrown overboard by the impact and was not seen again. The launch began to fill and, when it was seen that nothing could be done to rescue Mr. Smith, the launch was beached. The members of the party included Mrs. Smith, two women friends, and another man. Armstrong and the head office of the Labour Department very fair and very reasonable, and the provisions with regard to permitting farm workers to take their half holiday between milkings, if desired, was another instance in which Mr. Armstrong had met the wishes of the employer and employee. The fact that the farm labour legislation was working with a minimum amount of friction reflected great credit on the Minister of Labour and officers of his department.
