Austria Completely Under German Domination

Union Proclaimed From Vienna High Reward For Von Papen Former Police Officer Reinstated Received Monday, 9.30 p.m. VIENNA, March 14. Austria with her 7,000,000 people to-day came completely under German domination through a scries of laws rapidly promulgated. First of these was a proclamation of Austrian-German union, which was accompanied by an announcement of the plebiscite. \ Eater, Herr Hitler, as Fulmer and supreme commander of the armed forces, further decreed the appointment of Herr Joseph Bruerckel, District Leader in the Saar, to organise the Nazi Party in Austria and prepare for the plebiscite. Broadcasters are busy continually announcing fresh regulations, including a decision that only German nationals or Aryans henceforth are entitled to wear the swastika. Herr Hitler admitted Herr von Papen to the Nazi Party, bestowing the party’s gold medal upon him in recognition of his engineering of the Berchtesgaden meeting. This is the highest honour that can be paid in modern Germany. Herr Otto Steinhaeusel, former police chief, who was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for complicity in high treason in connection with the Austrian revolt in 1934, was appointed Police President. • NO EFFECT ON CONVERSATIONS’' HITLER’S HOPES WITH BRITAIN Received Monday, 9.20 p.m. LONDON, March 14. “On our side to-day’s developments will have no effect upon the impending Anglo-German conversations, and I hope there will be none on the British side,’’ said Herr Hitler in an interview with the Vienna correspondent of the Daily Mail. The same correspondent reports that four died in Vienna hospitals as a result of the fighting on Thursday and Friday. More than 300 were treated for wounds. It is announced that Jewish doctors have been turned out of the hospitals. The police arrested Herr Pyranaucr, a journalist working for the Hearst newspapers. The American Charge d’Affaires is seeking to obtain his release. GERMAN ’PLANES FLY OVER CZECHOSLOVAKIA CUSTOMS OFFICIALS REPLACED PRAGUE, March 14. It is officially stated that several German military ’planes flew over different places in Czechoslovakia while returning from Austria. The Government has drawn the attention of the German authorities to the occurrence. It received an assurance that a thorough inquiry would be made, and that, if it was proved the pilots acted against orders, care would be taken to prevent a recurrence. The first units of the German army have reached the Austrian-Czech frontier. It was announced that Germans have occupied the Customs houses and taken over the duties of the officials.
