The death has occurred of Mr. Clar ence Darrow, the famous American lawyer, aged 81, says a Chicago cable. Sir Stenson Cooke, general secretary of the Automobile Association of Great Britain, will be visiting Palmerston North on Thursday.

Pleasure at the fact that Mrs. Stevenson, wife of Cr. J. J. Stevenson, was showing an improvement in health, was expressed by the Palmerston North City Council last night. Rt. Rev. J. Ross, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Hiroshima, Japan, who has been attending the Catholic centenary celebrations at Auckland, is visiting Napier. During his visit he is staying at the Catholic Presbytery, Meance. Mr. J. R. Hughes, Palmerston North city engineer, and Mrs. Hughes are leaving this week on a trip to Australia. The City Council last night extended best wishes to them for a happy trip.

Mr. A. W. Wright, of Brisbane, Ws been appointed engineer and general manager of the Napier Gas Co., Ltd., and will take up his position at the end of April. He was selected from applicants in New Zealand, England and Australia.

Senior-Sergeant G. 11. Lambert, who is in charge of the uniform branch of the police at Hamilton, will leave by the Tainui at the end of this month on leave to visit England. During the four months of his absence he will be relieved by Sergeant M. Farrell, Wellington. Mr. F. Kamsbottom, Mayor of Patca, has been appointed one of the delegates to represent New Zealand at the international conference of Druids to be held at Hull in July. Mr. Ramsbottom has been a Druid for 36 years, more than eight years of which have been spent as a Grand Lodge officer.

Mr. John Dewar, who has retired from the position of Surveyor-General of the Federated Malay States, is a native of Otago, and as a young man was on the field staff of the Lands and Survey Department in Taranaki and the King Country. He joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1906 as an assistant surveyor.

The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday after a brief illness, of Mr. John Harold Dewis, at the age of forty-five years. The deceased gentleman was engaged in farming activities in the Bainesse district for several years, and then removed to Feilding. Four years ago tie went to Levin and entered into business. Ho was a member of the Levin branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and was very well-kuown locally. He is survived by a widow, twe sons and two daughters.
