MAGISTRATE ’ S COURT PROCEEDINGS Air J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at the session of the Alagistrate’s Court in Palmerston North yesterday. Arthur Lcs May, engine driver, on a charge of breach of a prohibition order, was fined £l. Hans Christensen admitted dangerous driving on the Foxton-Palmerston North highway. The charge was the result of defendant colliding with another another car when overtaking the latter vehicle. Senior-Sergeant McIntyre said that after this incident, defendant drove an erratic corner almost colliding with telegraph poles and finally running off the road into a ditch* Defendant’s explanation was defective steering gear.—Fined £2 with £1 13s 9d costs. Roy Charles Kraiger who cut a corner on a motor-cycle, was fined £2 with 16* costs. Robert Cecil Gilchrist failed to give right of way to a pedestrian at a crossing, and was fined 10s with 10 costs. George Alfred Wenborn had no warrant of fitness for his car and paid a penalty of £1 with 10s costs. Alex Henry Gillam, farmer, of Horoeka, Dannevirke, admitted assaulting Hector David Harris in King street, Palmerston North, on January 27 and was fined £3. According to the police, Harris pulled his cart into the kerb in King street and defendant, who was on the other side of the road in a car, called out how long he was going to stay there. When Harris said he had every right to be there, Gillam had got out of his car and struck Harris threo times. He had then driven off. A fine of 10s with 10s costs was inflected on an operator of an unlicensed radio set, for a first offence. Another defendant on a similar charge who had been before the Court before, was fined £1 with 13 costs and a third defendant who had taken no steps since the issue of the summons to get a license, was also fined £1 with 10s costs.

On a charge of being a rogue and vagabond in that he was found by night in the yard of the Family Hotel, Palmerston North, without excuse, a labourer named Angus Arnold Milne, aged 25 years, was sentenced to 14 days’ gaol

According to Detective-Sergeant Aleiklejohn, when the barman of the hotel heard the noise of a window being opened, he discovered accused and another man in the yard. One had his boots off and was standing on the sill of the window which was drawn down from the top. The window gave access to a stone room where ale was kept. Both men were chased and cornered in a blind alley. The other man had been before the court and sentenced to 14 days’ gaol. Mr Aleiklejohn said Alilno had been before the Court on previous occasions for theft, assault and disorderly behaviour.

His Worship said he saw no reason to that Alilne differently from his companion and imposed a term of 14 days.

Ernest Westly Walters was fined £2 with 10s costs for failing to pay employment levies, his arrears being £5 12s 6d.

Basil Wilfred Dalefield was sentenced to 3 months’ gaol for being £ls in arrears with maintenance due his wifa. He will be released on payment of the arrears.

A sentence of one month’s gaol was inflicted on Henry Hedley Briant Alaunder, labourer, of Wellington, who was convicted of assaulting Haykel Hannah, traveller, of Palmerston North, at the back of the Awapuni racecourse on December 27, the second day of the Alanawatu races. According to Hannah, Maunder split his lip and injured the bridge of his nose by a blow which knocked him to the ground. Maunder had accused him of being a “topper" in that he was always talking to the police. Accused, in explanation, s*id Hannah had his knife into him
