Women’s Institutes

KIMBOLTON. The annual meeting will be held in the local hall on Wednesday next. Mrs W. G. Short, of Cheltenham, will give a talk on Institute matters and display various novelties. A number of the members met at the convenor’s (Mrs V. Jones) residence on Thursday afternoon and wero shown round her garden, among her gay flowers there being some magnificent dahlias. The ladies then journeyed to Mrs Ivo Jensen’s garden where numerous beautiful flowers were admixed. A competition; naming native trees, proved most interesting. After a very pleasant walk into the native bush in tho Kimbolton domain, afternoon tea was spread out, everyone enjoying a refreshing cup of tea before returning home. The garden circle will next meet in Mrs F. E. Floury’s garden on Thursday next. ASHHURST. The annual meeting of the Ashhurst Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Fairless. The secretary’s report on the year’s work proved that a very interesting time had been spent. The treasurer gave a good account of the finance for the year, showing a satisfactory return and credit. A vote of thanks was extended to Mr J. McDonnell for auditing the books. Mrs Fairless, the retiring president, expressed her appreciation to the members for the help and support she had received from them during her term of office, and asked that tho same support and co-operation be given her successor, Mrs Woodroofe. The new committee is as follows: —Mesdames Amoin, Evans, Bleakly, Flowers, Cook, Currie, Williams Finlay Tunnecliffe, Brewer, Woodroofe and Miss Youle. Mrs B. Fairless was appointed tho delegate to attend the annual conference which is to be held at Wellington. Points prizes were awarded to Mrs Flowers, Miss Dobson and Mrs Bleakly. For the flower from the garden, Miss Dobson 1, Mrs Brockie 2. The monthly competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs Brockie with Mrs Williamson 2. Gifts wero presented to baby Forlong and baby McDonnell. Thought for the month: “He who sows courtesy, reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness, gathers love." ■ 1 WAITUNA WEST. The annual meeting was held on Thpursday, Mrs P. Stokes presiding. The newly elected committee is as fol-lows:—-Mesdames T. *Stokes, J. H. Williamson, A. E. Shannon, L. Meads, L. Wellwood, F. H. England, E. E. Pearce. E. G. England and the Misses K. England, M. Clare and Litchfield. Mrs T. Stokes was re-elected president and M s E. G. England was also re-elected secretary and the vice-presidents, Mrs J. H. Williamson, Mrs A. E. Shannon and Mrs L. Meads. Mrs Eric Pearce and Mrs L. Meads were appointed as delegates to the annual council meeting to be held in Palmerston North in April. It was decided to wait until next meeting to appoint a delegate to Wellington conference in July. Mrs E. G. England was appointed agent for “Home and Country’’ magazine. Arrangements for the April meeting are as follows: —Members please note that the date is altered to tho first Thursday, April 7th, as the second Thursday falls in Easter week. There is to be a demonstration of wood-fibre flower making, a competition for the best sugar bag cushion (stuffed) may be dyed if members wish, tho usual monthly competition of “best flower in my garden" will be continued, and the roll call, best labour-saving device for the house that costs nothing. Hostesses for April, Mrs A. E. Shannon, Mrs Shailer, Mrs N. Short, and Miss E. Shannon. Arrangements were discussed for the fifth birthday of the Institute, Friday, May 27 was the date agreed upon, proceedings to takd the form of a social and dance. Mrs Meads once more kindly consented to make the cake and Mrs A. E. Shannon to ice it. Further arrangements were left until April. A new member, Mrs Keith, was welcomed. Winners of the competition points prize for 1937 were Mrs A. E. Shannon 1, Mrs J. H. Williamson 2. STANWAY. The March meeting proved to be a very busy one as it was the annual meeting. There was a good attendance of members and visitors who were all welcomed by the president, Mrs J. Macfarlane. The following is an extract from the annual report presented by the secretary aud adopted:—This month of March brings us to the close of the fifth finaxicial year of our Institute. We have had a very pleasant social year, but have suffered the bereavement of a very highly esteemed member in the person of the late Mrs C. Callingham. Much has been learnt with interesting demonstrations as well as competitions, which are now showing a considerable increase in entries. Further reports which also proved most interesting were given on the garden circle by Mrs V. B. Short, drama circle by Miss Clare, library by Mrs Rosser, and the treasurer’s report by Mrs Harvey, this last report showing a very sound financial position. The president conveyed thanks on behalf of the members to the stall holders, musician, and to all who had helped to make the year such a successful one. A vote of thanks was also accorded Mr Leet, for auditing the books and to Air Hamilton for typing the nominations of the election. Airs L. Green on behalf of members in a few words thanked the retiring president for her untiring work in the interest of the institute. Airs and Miss Carpenter, members of the Porewa Institute, kindly acted as tellers and conducted tho election of a new committee, which resulted as follows:—Alesdames Macfarlane, A. Alarshall, Cockburn, J. Whitehead, Harvey, Rosser, V. Short, A. Callingham, F. Cowdrey Alisses V. Green, M. McLennan, AI. Guy; vice-presidents, Airs Alacfarlane, senr., and Miss AI. Guy, junr.; bon. secretary, Miss V. Green; treasurer, Mrs Harvey. On Airs Alacfar-

lane vacating the chair, Mrs Carpenter kindly presided. It was with sincere regret that the meeting learned that Airs Macfarlane did not care to accept nomination as the president for a further term, Airs A. Alarshall being elected in her stead. Airs Alarshall paid further tribute to Airs Alacfarlane’s work and hoped she would be able to worthily fill the retiring president’s place. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Airs and Aliss Carpenter for so kindly helping with tho election. Prior to afternoon tea being served, some snaps of interesting places were shown and explained by Alesdames Winder, Leech, and Aliss Clare, this proved a very welcome interlude after a busy programme. Airs Alacfarlane then called on Mrs Winder and Miss Clare to accept small tokens from the members prior to their leaving on holiday trips to England, opportunity was taken to wish these members bon voyage and a speedy return to our meetings. Winners of the competitions conducted during the afternoon resulted as follows:—Best bloom, Airs P. Green I, Mrs Groves 2; bottled gooseberries, Aliss V. Green. I, Airs Groves 2; coffee cake, Mrs Groves 1. , Hostesses for the afternoon who served a dainty tea were Mesdames Rosser, Short, R. Green and Aliss J. Rosser. Alembers are asked to note that the competitions for April are: Cooking, “apple turnover"; satin cushion (not embroidered); best bloom; and hostesses, Mesdames Whitehead Smith, Leech and Miss J. Dermer. ALANGAAIAIRE INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the above institute was held on the 2nd inst.. Mrs L. R. Wards presiding over a large attendance of members. As it was the annual meeting a good deal of business was put through. It was decided to celebrate the Institute’s 6th birthday by holding a picnic on the 7th inst. The newly-elected officers were:—President, Mrs H. Henderson, vice-president, Mrs J. Brosnahan; secretary, Alxss L. Moriarty; assistant secretary, Miss L. Ralph; treasurer, Aliss AI. Baron (reelected). On behalf of the members. Mrs Brosnahan thanked the retiring president for the work she had achieved during the past two years. Airs Wards suitably responded and made reference to the splendid work Mrs Henderson had done for the Institute during her i years as secretary, and wished her every happiness in her new office as president. The roll-call was 4 ‘ How I Spent Christmas Day." The competitions were (1) the best satin cushion, Mrs C. Mabey 1, Mrs Lyall 2, and real flowers (Mrs Lyall 1, Miss M. Baron 2)Alesdames Hewitt and Brosnahan kindly acted as judges. The hostesses were Alesdames Roil, Pinfold and McFall who served a dainty afternoon tea. Their competitions were won by Airs Welsh and Airs Lyall. The meeting then closed with the singing of the National *nthem. ’
