Regrading Railways First Division

NO SUGGESTION OF STINGINESS Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. At the annual smoke concert of the Wellington branch of the Railway Officers’ Institute on Saturday night Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, announced that the report of the committee that had considered the I'egrading of tho first division had been in his hands for several days and he hoped to hand it over to representatives of the institute this week. If the institute handled it as expeditiously as the management had he would bb very pleased. He thought the members of the committee and the representatives of the institute would not say there had been any suggestion of stinginess on the part of the management. He felt that effect would be given to whatever proposals were put to the Minister. The regrading had takei a little longer than had been wished, but he desired to compliment the committee od tl* manner fn which it had done its work. Ho believed the officers were all better off for having waited, gaining the benefit of what had been done in other branches of the Public Service in the name of regrading. If the management had erred it was on the side of generosity. Referring to the hope expressed by Mr. E. W. Barnes, president of the N.Z.R.0.1., that something more would be done for grade seven members of the sevice, Mr. Mackley said he did not think Mr. Barnes would be far wrong in the final analysis. Mr. Mackley made an appeal for the maintenance of goodwill between the management and the officers of the service.
