From Our Own Correspondent. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. N. Brown,, of Wellington, are visitors to Shannon, and are the guests of their daughter, Mrs. S. L. Graham, Bailance street. Mr and Mrs Basil Harris and Mr and Mrs Woodmas, are holidaying at Waitarere beach. Miss Joyce Quarrie, of the Dannevlrke Hospital, has been spending her annual leave with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Quarrie, Grey street. Miss M. Cole left last week for Wanganui, and will stay with her sister, Mrs Gilford, for some time. A successful exhibitor with his horses, Mr R. R. Lind, of Shannon, gamed further awards at the Masterton Show recently, when out of nine entries he secured six firsts, two seconds, one third, a champion, and a reserve champion. The winner of the points prize has not yet been announced, but it rs quite probable that Mr Lind may carry off that award also. The final game for the bowling single championship was played on Tuesday evening between F. Whibley and T. Hemmingson, resulting in a win for Hemmingson by 21 —« u n Council. The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr E. Butt). Also present were Councillors W. Clayton. A. E. Hyde, J. Curran, Jnr., R. R. Lind and R. Downes. The Town Clerk reported that 90 per cent, of the rates had so far been collected, as against 87 per cent, up to the same time last year. Building permits had been issued to the value of £1,117, as compared with £197 last year. The Health Inspector notified that during January one case of diphtheria had been notified. Cr. Clayton reported that he had met the Chief Librarian, Wellington City, together with Mr Alley, and had discussed with them their proposal for improving the local library. The proposed plan made, provision for an exchange of 130 books quarterly. The visitors arranged to forward further particulars regading the cost of distributing the books, and the matter will be discussed at a future date. With regard to staff holidays, It was decided these should begin ot once, and that in future all holidays should be held in January. The Town Clerk was appointed to represent the Council at the forthcoming Municipal Conference. A.A. and C. Club. Owing to the evening drawing in rapidly, it was found necessary to abandon a number of the events at the weekly meeting of the Shannon A.A. and C. Club on Thursday last. However. a successful meeting was held, there being a good crowd of spectators to witness many close finishes. Details of the events are: 75yds., boys, W. Harding 1, Cain 2. Lind 3; girls, J. Anderson 2 The Shannon Bowling Club held another of its popular electric-light, tournaments on Thursday night, s.ix rinks participating, one from Otaki, two from Levin and three local. Details of play are as follow: Grey (Otaki) 2 wins, Bull (Levin) 3, Childs (Levin) 0, Alexander (Shannon) 2, Whibley (Shannon) S. Clayton (Shannon) 2. In the play off between Bull’s rink, comprising M. O’Connor, C. Sherwood, A. Powell and W. Bull (s), and the Shannon rink, It. Lange, A. Hyde, S. Sheddon and F. "Whibley (s), the visitors defeated the home rink after a keenly fought and interesting match. Each member of the successful rink was the recipient of an attractive mantle clock, and in making the presentation, Mr W. Clayton congratulated the winners heartily on their wellearned victory. Mr W. Bull replied on behalf of the Levin rink. The thanks oi the club are cme to tho ladies who efficiently handled the supper arrangements.
