firm Market for Breeding Ewes QUALITY 2-THS SELL AT OVER £2 Yesterday’s live-stock sale at Feilding attracted an entry of approximately 20,000 sheep which found the breeding ewe market still quite firm and active following last week’s fair. Good, well-bred 2-ths realised to £2 and over which values were obtained for offerings of hill-bred sheep from the Hunterville district. There was a firm market for store lambs and good business was done in this section. Fat sheep were easier on late quotations but fat cattle firm. Practically no station cattle were available and rates for boner cows showed a hardening tendency. In the fat sheep section there was a large offering of ewe and wether mutton of good medium quality to prime and over-heavy condition. Values iu this department were easier than those ruling a fortnight back and were more in keeping with schedule rates. Lam!' offerings were made in small lots and excepting for extra prime heavyweights values were on a par with current freezing quotations. An offering of three medium-weight lambs on account of D. \V. Reid realised 20s 3d and eight shorn S.D. on the same account made 17s 9d. Two nice weight lambs offered on account of W. Price realised 22s 9d. For a pen of four medium weight lambs on account of E. Bpeedy 22s was paid. Seven heavy prime lambs on account of Mrs. J. Shapleski realised 275. Three good lambs, nice weights, offered on account of Mrs. Adsett, sold at 24s 6d. On account of J. E. Wingate two good lambs of nice quality sold at 235. Other small pens sold at from lGs 6d to 21s fid. The offering of blackface 2-ths was made up of a generally even line, the best of them a pen of 18, selling at 24s 7d. Other pens sold at from Ids 9d for light, unfinished sorts, to 245. Good conditioned ewes made up to -Os which was the price obtained by J. Callesou for a pen of 18. Another peu of 19 on the same account made 19s. Two small pens of good ewes on account of L. E. D’Ath sold at from 17s 6d to 18s lOd. A pen of 13 good firm ewes on account of L. Harding realised 19b. An entry of 33 good ewes on account of D. Speedy realised 18s 4d. An offering of eight well-done ewes on account Mrs. Knyvett realised 23s 2d. Good Sduthdown ewe mutton made up to 265, a pen of three offered on account of D. W. Reid realising this price. For a pen of 17 good ewes offered on account of B. McLeod 18s was realised. A pen of 19 ewes offered on account of G. Monrad realised 16s 6d. Wether mutton made up to 27s 6d, a price which was paid for an offering of 15 made on account of W. Laughton. * * Westerhill ’ ’ wethers numbering 51 realised 24s. —An even line of medium quality, meaty sheep. . On account of C. McKinnon an offering -of 39 good wethers made 26s and a further pen of 13 on the same account made 26s 6d. Manson Est. wethers from Stanway numbering 29 sold at 24s 2d. From Rongotea an offering of 26 wethers on account of D. B. Rowe realised 23s 6d. Close on 20,000 sheep were yarded in the store pens, the bulk of the entry being made up of mixed aged breeding ewes of fair to medium to good quality. The tone was quite as strong as the recent fair values an in the two-tooth section values for the best pens were above £2. Business was generally verybrisk and well-bred straight lines found a ready market. Practically everything of quality was disposed of under the hammer at very satisfactory returns to the vendors. Hunterville-bred 2-ths were an attractive entry and keen competition resulted for these high country sheep. A pen tit 235 offered on account of J. A. T. Brown saw the bidding go to 40s for the first cut and the balance was sold at 395. On account of A. S. Brown the bidding for a pen of 245 went to 43s 2d for the first cut and the balance were disposed of at 42s 2d. Mr. Herbert Brown’s offering of 130 found an eager buyer at 435. These were the outstanding two-tooths of the sale, being wellbred and in excellent condition. Other sales of two-tooth ewes were as follows: A small pen of 29 on account of a dealer changed hands at 32s 4d. On the same account another pen of 40 realised 24b Od. .On account of the Coulter Estate a pen of 42’realised 25s Id. A pen of 42 on account of D. B. Rowe sold at_3os Id. For a pen of 83 offered on account of F; Lethbridge 32s 6d was paid. Offered on account of the Craig Estate a line of 60 changed hands at . 295. An offering of 184 on account of E. M. Lloyd realised 30s 6d. On account of Whiskie Bros., of Halcombe, an offering of 46 sold at 325. Seventy-one offered on account of W. D. Marshall made 33s 3. A pen of 90 offered on account of R. tV. Brown realised 30s 6d. For a pen of 81 on account of C. Brown 36s 6d was paid and a small pen of 20 offered on account of R. Will realised 395. Halcombe-bred 2-ths on account of W. B. sold at 36s 3d. On account of E. G. Thompson, of Feilding 221 4-th ewes sold at 355, and a further line of 145 on the same account realised 31s 9d. For a pen of 57 4-th ewes offered on account of H. Wicks 26s was realised. A pen of 47 4-th and 6-th ewes offered on account of R. W. Brown realised The following is a selection of the sales in the aged ewe section which comprised the larger part of the offering of breeding ewes: — Five and six-year ewes, 175, from Colyton, offered on account of J. J. Murphy, realised 20s. An offering of 204 five-year ewes on account of W. T. Pratt realised 23s 3d. Six-year ewes from Colyton numbering 233, offered on account of B. McLeod, changed hands at 16s. A line of 313 six-year ewes on account of Short and Son sold at 20s 6d. A nice line of 225 four-year ewes offered on account W. T. Pratt. of Apiti, found a buyer at 30s Id. On the same account a peu of 255 five-year ewes realised 24s 6d. From the hilly Kewa country a line of 170 four and five-year ewes on account of the estate of H. P. Clare realised 21s. A good line of 449 four and five-year ewes offered on account of E. W. Ross realise d 245. Offered on accouut of A. R. Bartlett, a pen of 255 five-year ewes sold at 28s 9d. Mixed ewes on account of W. Williams and numbering 236 sold at 235. On account of R. McDonald, a pen of 400 five-year ewes sold in two lots at 22s and 24s Id. For a pen of 196 five and six-year ewes yarded on account of H. D. Marshall, 24s 6d was paid. On account of Flock House Station a pen of 296 mixed aged ewes realised 19s 2d and a further pen of similar sheep on the same account made 20s 4d. For a pen of 189. four and five-year ewes offered on account of D. G. Forlong, 29s 3d was paid. Four and five-year ewes numbering 357, offered on account of R. McDonald, realised 25s 6d. Firm rates prevailed for store lambs, of which there was a good yarding. For. a pen of 77 shorn wether lambs offered on account of M. D. Colquhoun, of Feilding, 20s Id was paid. A further pen of 180 on the same account realised 18s 6d. A line of small ewe lambs numbering 51, offered on account of K. Price, sold at 17s Sd. Woolly blackface lambs numbering 133, offered on account of H. Cornfoot, sold at 18s 6d and a further pen of 61 realised 14s Bd. “Westerhill’ 7 Suffolk lambs number* ing 34 made 17s lOd and 31 blackfaces on the same account realised 17s 6d. For 60 wether lambs offered on account of Mrs. England 18s 3d was real* ised, while a second pen of 69 on the same account made 15s lOd. A pen of 42 ewe lambs offered on account of F. S. Mcßeth realised 19s lOd. On account of Massey College, a pen of 39 wether lambs sold at 15s 7d and a pen of 52 blackface lambs made 16s 4d. Small two-tooth wethers offered on account of F. Lethbridge sold at 21s. There was a comparatively small yarding of fat cattle, made up mostly of ex-dairy sorts. Values were firm on late rates and the sale was considered quite good. Run Aberdeen Angus cows offered on account of M, D. Colquhoun sold at £8 7s for a line of nine and a single beast changed hands at £8 15s. Three A.A. heifers on the same account made £8 6s. The following are the quotations for other lines: Ex-dairy cows: £4 2s 6d to £8; heifers, £4 17s fid to £7 17s 6d; vealers, £2 32s 6d to £3. The market for store cattle was very firm although the business was confined, to boner cows. A small offering of low-condiioned two-year steers sold at £6 to £B. Boner cows £2 7s fid to £4 12s 6d, weaner steers £2 ss, weaner heifers £1 12s 6d to £2 6s. Dairy cattle were in very short supply, the sales being as follows: Bpringing cows £6 to £B, springing heifers £? 2s 6d.
