WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAMS
SHOULD MEN CAPTAIN THEM? ATTITUDE IN ENGLAND Recently the Australian lawn tennis authorities appointed a man to captain the women’s lawn tennis team to go abroad. This was the policy of England for some years. It has just been changed and a woman will be captain this year. The London correspondent of the Sydney Referee writes that the British Lawn Tennis Association, after a conference v/ith the twelve ranking women players, asked them to nams two women from whom the International Match Committee might select a captain for the Wightman Cup team. The women after a prolonged discussion appear to have won their point. Their strong argument has been that during the seven years they have had a male captain they siufered an unbroken series of defeats.
They nominated Mrs M. R. King and Miss E. M. Hervey. Mrs King was appointed to captain the team at Wimbledon on June 10 and 11. America and England both have women captains.
