Ordered Wreaths and Wrote Bad Cheques
YOUNG MAN’S NOVEL SCHEME Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Last Night. In the Supreme Court to-day two prisoners remanded for sentence came before Mr. Justico Blair. Herbert Leah Paterson, found guilty of 11 charges of false pretences and two of obtaining credit by fraud, was sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding three years on each of the 13 charges, the sentences to be concurrent. The judge said that the prisoner had gone from one part of New Zealand to another with a system of his own of ordering wreaths for mourners from florists and tendering valueless cheques. The offences totalled a large number for a young man, and he had qualified to be declared an habitual criminal. William Morris, on charges of breaking, entering and theft, was sentenced to reformative detention for a period not exceeding two years.
