Gallantry Rewarded
LIVE BOMB IN CROWDED CAFE Received Friday, 7 p.m. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Feb. 24. The gallant action of Private J. E. Mote, of the first Battalion, Essex Regiment, in picking up a live bourn whicn Had oeen thrown into a crowded cate at Haifa on Christmas Day, and throwing it into the street wnere it exploded, has been rewarded. The War office announces that the Ring nas approved the award of the Medal of the British Empire (Military Division) for gallantry. The announcement stated that the Jordania Cafe, Haifa, was crowded with soldi era and civilians when the bomb was thrown among them. Mott, who was seated at a table with some other men of the battalion, picked up the bomo and hurled it through a window into the street where it exploded with great violence. Mott’s courageous act undoubtedly saved several lives and injuries to many of his companions.
