Lodge Ritual Contest

EUREKA RETAIL TROPHY From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPAWA, Feb. 24. Sister P. Watson presided over a very large attendance of members at the .fortnightly meeting of Ruataniwha Lodge of Druids held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Waipawa, on Tuesday evening. Sick pay and accounts were passed for payment and ordinary routine business was disposed of. One member was proposed for membership. The matter of holding a lodge ball in June is to be discussed further at the next meeting. The chief business of the evening was the half-yearly ritual competition for the Potter Shield and McClurg Cup.. The contestants on this occasion were Eureka Lodge (Hastings) and Ruataniwha Lodge (Waipawa). For various reasons Albion Lodge (Napier) did not enter the contest this time.

There were present a large gathering of officers and members from the Eureka Lodge and also P.A.’s Bros. Power, Goulding and Girvan from Albion Lodge. The visitors were extended a cordial welcome by the A.D. of Ruataniwha Lodge. Bro. Williams, the A.D. of Eureka Lodge, and P.A. Bro. Goulding (Albion) expressed thanks for he cordial welcome extended to them. The D.P. Sister E. Pedersen (Ruataniwha was also in attendance.

The judges for the competition were P.A.’s Bro. Power (Albion), C. H. Harrington (Ruataniwha) and P.D.P. Bro. P. W. Farnell (Eureka). The result of the competition was that Eureka retained their hold on the trophies for another six months.

In delivering the judges’ verdict, P.D.P. Bro. Farnell stated that the competition had been well up to the standard of previous contests. The floor work of both lodges had been good, but Ruataniwha had lost points through some officers making mistakes in the various speaking parts. Sister Watson in reply extended congratulations to Eureka Lodge on their success in retaining the trophies. A.D. Bro. Williams replied on behalf of Eureka Lodge, and expressed the hope that on the occasions of the next contest, which is to be held at Hastings, that Ruataniwha Lodge would be successful. On the motion of P.A. Bro. W. C. F. Spargo the judges were accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation for their services. The trophies were presented to the successful lodge by the D.P. Sister Pedersen. P.A. Bro. H. E. Carter expressed regret that the Albion Lodge had not participated in the contest and hoped that the next competition would again 6ee them competing. A very dainty supper was served by the social committee.
