Fruirt Our Own Correspondent. Sports Club.

The committee members of the Apiti Athletic Sports Club are busy with preparations for the sports next week. Indications point to a record number of entries this year. The Feilding Pipe Band will be in attendance and a looud-speaker system will broadcast the programme and announcements. Several Feilding business firms have made donations to club. As advertised, a popular Manawatu orchestra will play for the dance to follow the sports. Young Farmers’ Club.

Mr Hugh Cowan presided at the meeting of the Apiti Young Farmers’ Club on Monday evening and welcomed the large gathering, including many members of the Apiti branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr C. Spence thanked those members who had assisted at the recent farewell evening, and the secretary, Mr C. Elliott, presented the balance sheet for same. Mr Howard Viles was congratulated on being placed first in the judging competition at tho Manen Show, for which there were 28 competitors. The chairman introduced Mr L. J. Wild, M.A., Bs.C.. principal of the Feilding Agricultural High School, who gave a most interesting address on his recent trip abroad. The speaker said that ills interest in Young Farmers’ Clubs commenced many years ago in the South Island, where he had been president of the movement. Recently the North Island clubs had made rapid progress and now hf\ye a larger membership than the South Island. Brief mention was made of the many countries visited and farming conditions compared with New Zealand farming. Sweden was like New Zealand and the speaker found the people very hospitable. The value of the folk schools in Denmark was emphasised, and the organisaticn of the schools fully explained. At the close of his address, the speaker answered many questions. A vote _of thanks was passed to Mr Wild for his instructive address. Garden Party. The ladies of the Presbyterian Guild were favoured with lovely summer weather on Tuesday for their garden party at “The Manse,” which made an attractive setting for a very successful function. Before declaring the party open. Rev. L. J. Hodson expressed sympathy with Mr W. S. He Qtiesne in his bereavement, and all present stood in silence. Misses Paterson and Madge McKay were in charge of the “bring a nd buy” stall; Rev. L. J. Hodson, Mrs W. :VI. Duncan, Misses A. Hodson and E. Jensen supervised the various competitions; Mrs L. J. Hodson (president) and Mesdames A. W. Benseman, C. Spence, •T.Cawood, H. Mapson, C. Mclntyre, Jensen and Miss Cowan were responsible for afternoon tea, which was served on a shady verandah. The afternoon concluded with the presentation of prizes to the following by Rev. Hodson: Clock croquet, Mr C. Spence; golf putting. Mrs K. Schmidt; zig-zag croquet, Mrs A. W. Bird; hidden number, Mrs Athol Viles; IMpo bowls, Miss Shirley Prujean and Master James Benseman. Personal. Mr C. Watkins, formerly of Foxton, is spending a few days in Apiti with his parents, before proceeding to New Plymouth to take up an appointment there. Oddfellows' Lodge. The next meeting of the Apiti Oddfellows Hodge will be the last to be held on a Saturday night. Owing to so many counter-attractions on Saturday evenings, it has been arranged to change the meeting night..
