Little-known Offence
PURCHASING OP “TOTE” TICKETS Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. “What offence is this! If I ask someone to buy a ticket for me is that an offence? It is certainly a new one on me.” These remarks were passed by M». E. C. Levvey, S.M., in Court this morning, when Albert Wallace Robinson was charged with aiding and abetting Horace Robinson as an agent in the purchasing of two totalisator tickets. Mr. Simes represented Robinson, who did not appear, a plea of guilty being entered. Mr. Simes assured the Magistrate that the action constituted an offence. Senior-Sergeant Felton explained that defendant had got his 17-year-old sou to purchase the tickets. He had explained that he was unaware that ho was committing an offence. “This is a matter that is not generally known to the public/’ said Mr. Simes. “The fact that a person in asking another to buy a ticket commits an offence as well as the purchaser is not generally appreciated. This sort of thing goes on hundreds of times every day of every race meeting.” “I think we might treat this case as a warning and order him to pay costs,” declared the Magistrate.
