CHILD’S LIFE FILMED
Some Grand Moments
of the Fifth Scientific Film Congress, Miss Patricia Hutchins described a fijm which showed pictures of a child who had been filmed since she was a few minutes old right up to the age of seven. “The same child, mind you—the first time It has ever been done, I think. It was her father’s idea—you see, he is a film producer and very interested in studying children. He wanted to show how a child’s games are not just accidents, but a part of their mental and physical development. There are some grand moments no studio work could beat, because it has been made in Dr.
Puchstein’s own house with the camera always hidden away so that he could photograph the children when they didn’t really know he was there. You can just imagine how numerous and really alive the whole thing is. “It will be in England I hope sometime, and you will see for yourself the fine introduction showing the gradual way the baby discovers the use of her limbs. Then come the shots of her first attempts to walk when she is obviously thinking out something for herself (how to get hold of a toy fallen out of the play park, I think it was.”
