New Season Brings Many Fine Pictures

HOLLYWOOD’S SPECTACULAR BID Hollywood’s promises of ‘‘big pictures" will he fulfilled in spectacular fashion at the turn of the year when the studios release in rapid-fire succession a series of important productions. A score of films with comedy, music, spectacle and drama, costing millions of dollars to produce, will reach the movie palaces of the world during the early weeks of the new season.

Paramount’s schedule alone revealed a grand season of entertainment in store for theatregoers with “Souls at Sea" being the first indication of the promised ambitious production schedule. Closely following “Souls At Sea" is "Artists and Models” with the inimitable Jack Benny in the leading role and a group of very talented stage and radio stars including the Yacht Club Boys, Connie Boswell and others. Then there is “Ebb Tide,” the first Technicolour film of the sea which Paramount has faithfully reproduced from Robert Louis Stevenson’s story and has cast in the leading role Oscar Homolka, who for many years was one of the famous stars of the Viennese stage and recently made more famous by the German master, Max Reinhardt. The cast of “Ebb Tide” includes Ray Milland and Frances Farmer.

At the present time “Wells Fargo” is receiving the plaudits of all New York, where the picture is having its world premiere at the Paramount Theatre on Broadway. “Wells Fargo” has been called a "cavalcade of American transportation’’ and as an indication of its splendid entertainment value, we need merely report that it was produced for Paramount by Frank Lloyd who made "Mutiny on the Bounty," “Cavalcade" and other fine productions. “Wells Fargo" stars Joel MeCrea and his wife, Frances Dee. The early part of the new season will also see the release of Gary Cooper’s second picture in which this time Paramount co-stars him with Claudette Colbert in a production titled "Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife.” Tho season ahead is indeed a fascinating one for theatregoers and the fulfilment of producers’ promises for "bigger" pictures is certainly indicated in the productions already announced.
