OLD-TIME SPORTSMAN
DEATH OF MR. J. N. CORNER. Keen regret was felt in Auckland sporting circles at the death of Mr. J. N. Corner, of Takapuna, who collapsed suddenly while playing in a friendly cricket match at Victoria Park. A keen follower of sports and one who had a lengthy and.outstanding playing career, he will be greatly missed by his many friends.
The late Mr. Corner played senior football as half-back for the wellknown Poneke Club in Wellington, a club-mate of his being the famous W. J. ("Billy”) Wallace. He was also a member of the Pirates Club in Dunedin and the North Shore side in Auckland, while he played for the Railway team when it won the Auckland Rugby championship in 1917. In later years Mr. Corner was a member of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association.
Cricket and yachting were other sports which attracted a great deal of Mr. Corner’s interest. He played for the North Shore senior cricket team, was a member of the New Zealand Yacht Squadron, while he was a regular visitor to Lake Taupo for the trout fishing.
