OFFER TO GRIMMETT

ENGAGEMENT IN ENGLAND

LANCASHIRE LEAGUE CLUB. There is a possibility that C. V. Grimmett, the great Australian slow bowler, may, after all, go to England to play. There is nothing definite. Mr. C. Spencer, of Sydney, has received a cablegram from England asking him to get into touch with Grimmett, and, if possible, make an arrangement with him to play with a certain Lancashire League club over there. If the negotiations come to a head, Grimmett will be paid the most substantial amount received by any player from overseas. Lancashire League clubs are always on the look-out for "gate” attractions, and there is no doubt that Grimmett would draw the crowds. After the last tour several English cricket writers urged the M.C.C. to engage the little South Australian, so that he could give rising players a thorough grounding in googly bowling. Many famous players have accepted engagements to play League cricket.

Hobbs, Rhodes, McDonald, O’Keefe, Constantine, Amar Singh, Root, Merritt, Arthur Richardson, Headley and Tyldesley have all been attracted by the remunerative one-day matches staged In the north of England. When Bradman was at loggerheads with the Australian Board of Control he was made a most lucrative offer by Accrington Club to join its ranks, and the secretary of the club said at the time that, in the event of the world’s greatest batsman accepting the offer, the club would immediately double the accommodation at the ground.
