Railway Wagon Springs Ordered in Australia
MANUFACTURERS INDIGNANT Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The action of the Government in placing an order in Australia for the manufacture of some thousands of laminated wagon spripgs for the Railday Department has aroused the indignation of local manufacturers. The springs have been manufactured in New Zealand previously, but owing to the increased labour costs the cost of manufacture in the Dominion has now risen slightly. It was stated in one quarter this morning that it seemed the Government was bent on victimising those whose only sin was that they put the law of the land into effect through tho introduction of the shorter week and higher wages.
"It is tantamount to the State denying its own policy, or pretended policy," said Mr. N. E. Crump, secretary of the Auckland Alanufacturers' Association, commenting on the position. He added that numerous complaints had been received by his association lately concerning the purchase by the Government of goods which could be made satisfactorily in New Zealand.
