Entertaining the Bandsmen
LADIES’ COMMITTEE BUSY To. entertain the members of 17 bands, some 75 visiting ladies not to mention, judges officials and competitors in the girls’ sports, was no easy task, but on Monday afternoon the ladies band committee provided a welcome afternoon tea in the entertainment hall at the Showgrounds. The lounge was gay with flags and bowls of belladonna lilies, zinnias and maidenhair fern and the tea tables were decorated with outstanding blooms, this being the artistic work of the gardening circle of the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild. The Mayoress, Mrs A. E. Mansford presided being assisted by Miss Matheson joint secretary with Mrs W. F. Field of the ladies’ committee.
A varied programme of entertainment for the visiting bandsmen and their wives has been arranged. Yesterday afternoon cars loaned by citizens, left the war memorial at 2 p.m. for the Awapuni Race Course, proceeding to the beautiful gardens of Mr and Mrs R. Tanner, Karere, where the fernery, now at its best, called forth much admiration from the visitors. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee and Mr and Mrs Tanner were enthusiastically thanked for their hospitality. The programme for to-day embraces a drive to Mr A. J. Shatters nursery gardens where a wealth of daklias will' bo a delight to the eye. After a drive through the Esplanade and an inspection of. Massey College, the visitors will be entertained to afternoon tea at C. M. Boss's Tea Rooms.
A picture party has been arranged for Thursday afternoon and Friday and Saturday have been, left free.
