Remarkable Escape
MOTORIST COLLIDES WITH TELEGRAPH POLE
A remarkable escape from injury was experienced by Joseph Sains bury, a farm hand employed at Hatuma, when the car he was driving crashed into a telegraph pole on the main road about a mile on the Gorge side of Woodville on Saturday evening.
The car, a modern high powered three-seater, was badly damaged on both sides. On the left side the front mudguard and running board folded up and on the driver’s side the bodywork was considerably battered and the glass in the door and behind the driver shattered. The accident occurred at about 6.30 p.m. Mr. Sainsbury was travelling south and when opposite Mr. T. White man’s homestead, where the road takes a slight turn, the car went off the road on to a gently sloping bank. Unfortunately for the driver there was a wooden telegraph pole in the path of the car and no room to get between this and the fence. The violence of the collision which occurred may be judged from the fact that the pole was broken in two places.
