Youth is Victim—and Cause of Road Deaths
Young people are the chief victims of road accidents—and are also the chief causes of road accidents. This was revealed by Lieut.-Colonel J. A. A. Pickard in an address to the Public Works, Roads and Transport Congress and Exhibition in London. “All too frequently youth is not only the unfortunate killed but also the unintentional killer,” he said. “Youth is too valuable a national asset to be wasted so futile.” ‘He said this tragedy of youth could best be emphasised by the following:— Children under the age of eight are being killed at the rate of two a day. Over 40 per cent, of the riders or drivers of vehicles involved in accidents resulting in death to others are between the ages of 15 and 30. The main peak of those killed in the early twenties was made ap mainly of motor-cyclists and cyclists. As a corollary to Lieut.-Col. Pickard’s remarks came the road accident statistics for October. There were 618 persons killed on the roads last month. This is the highest so far this year. Injured numbered 19,868, of which 6582 were pedestrians.
In the London area there wero 90 killed and 5037 injured, compared with 101 and 5111 last October,
