To Memory of Rifle Brigade
CAIRN UNVEILED; TREES PLANTED Per Presa Association. WANGANUI, Last Night. A cairn of shell rock inlaid with black battalion patches done in ebony, was unveiled at Wanganui to-day as a memorial to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, a unit of the New Zealand Division formed during the war, which served with great distinction and was disbanded immediately after. The memorial is the only one of its kind to the Brigade in the Dominion and forms part of an Island-wide scheme to plant the main north road from Wellington to Auckland with trees on one side in commemoration of the silver jubilee of the late King George V, and the other to 'commemorate deeds and traditions of the New Zealand Division in the Great War. That portion of the avenue already planted near the site of the memorial unveiled to-day has been dedicated to the memory of the Rifle Brigade. The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon J. R. Young assisted by Brigadier-General A. E. Stewart, C.M.G., D. 5.0., who came specially for the occasion.
Already twenty miles of the proposed avenue of trees has been planted extending from Wanganui to Waitotara. It is hoped to get the schools along the route right through the Island to undertake the planting of their portion of the main road.
