Nearly all streams broke their banks, the waters flattening miles of fences and demolishing and damaging bridges and floodgates and causing serious landslides and slips. The Tinui, To Wharau, Stronvar and Whakataki districts suffered most. In some tfreas .the rainfall was tho heaviest in thirty years. It is feared one settler lost 400 ewes. A car belonging to Wellington youths was caught in the flooded Whareama
river and carried out to sea. Several houses were inundated and the residents forced to leave. Nearly three inches of rain fell at Te Wharau in four hours, while the rivers rose as high as 20 feet. Some settlers are isolated as a result of slips on the roads. w .
