Margarine Marketing

INCREASE IN BRITAIN. LONDON, Jan. 26. Soap, margarine and compound lard manufacturers in the United Kingdom increased their consumption in 1936, according to figures just issued by the Imperial Economic Committee in its report on vegetable oils and oilseeds. The margarine figures reflect the increased sales of this product in Britain. Annual consumption of oils and fats in the margarine industry fell in 1934 to 137,000 tons. There were increases in the two subsequent years, the figure in 1936 being 181,000 tons. This is still, however, below the 1930 total of 202,000 tons. The United Kingdom is the second largest producer of margar* ine, being exceeded only by Germany, which also made greater quantities in 1935 and 1936. Tho chief recent development in the United Kingdom has been the increasing use made of whale oil for margarine at the expense of vegetable oils. Compound lard manufacturers has increased rapidly in recent years, latger quantities having been sold by the retail trade as domestic cooking fat. Whale oil has also been more used for this product in place of cotton-seed oil. In soap making the chief change has been increased use of vegetable oi'f, chiefly because of tbe larger prcjvrGon of palm oil used. The use of animal fats such as tallow has declined. The report shows that marked improvement in prices and a well-main-tained demand were the chief features of the world oilseed situation in 1936. Last year, however, oilseed prices declined. The chief oilseeds and nuts entering world trade in 1936 were, in order of weight, soya beans, linseed, ground nuts, copra, palm kernels and cottonseed. The principal vegetable oils, in the same order, were palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil and ground nut oil.
