Wanganui Track Work

GOING WAS GOOD FOR SATURDAY’S GALLOPS From Our Own Correspondent. WANGANUI, Last Night. With no visiting horses here yet for the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting track work on Saturday morning was confined to the Wanganuitrained contingent. After showers during the night tho track, number one grass, was in excellent order, and perhaps a little faster after breakfast than at the earlier session. W. Rayner had Icing and Scarf Dance out first and the pair pleased by slipping over five furlongs in 1.1 2-5, with Icing having, if anything, the advantage over her companion at the finish. Icing is engaged in the Tayforth Hack Handicap on Thursday, but she has to carry 9.5. Scarf Dance will run in the Kai Iwi Maiden, in which she will be ridden by B. H. Morris, whereas S. Wilson will pilot Icing in her engagements. Mozeltove and Civil were to have gone three furlongs together, but he filly got away ahead of her companion, covering the distance in 38Sec. However, Mozeltove her over the final stages to finish on terms in 37 1-5. Reipar, appearing to appreciate the fact that the sting was out of the ground, covered a couple of circuits at a useful pace, but he will not be raced for some time. Artful Dodger, who is to run in the Westmere Hack Hurdles, got through useful work on the inside track, but will not be schooled till Monday. He is inclined to grossness but works well. Captain Treville was not extended over the first couple of furlongs of a seven furlong task, but in registering 1.37 he was responsible for a pleasing task, the last five furlongs taking 1.3. He is to run in the Tayforth Hack Handicap on Thursday. Airing, with K. Chote in the saddle, went very fast over the initial quarter of his half-mile task, recording a tick under 24sec., and he kept the pace up to run the four furlongs in 49sec. As the tracks are so much easier at this stage he must be given an excellent chance in early engagements. All Buns by and Supler, who do not claim first-day engagements at the Wanganui meeting, were let off with easy tasks.

The first to work after the breakfast interval was Gaily, who was not bustled over four furlongs to register 50 3-ssec., the first quarter taking her 25sec. The Siegfried mare has top weight, 9.0, in the Petre Hack Handicap on Thursday, but she shapes like a good one and apparently her run of successes may still continue. Middle was accompanied by Pekoe from the si»-furlong peg to the top and then came on by himself to finish the full distance in 1.17 4-5. The first quarter took the pair 26sec. and they were still together after covering half a mile in 50 4-ssec. Middle appears to be in good order for his Wanganui Cup engagement, and with the minimum he must be given a chance if he gets anything like a decent run. Master Norval trotted round a couple Of times on the inside track and then ran half a mile in 53 l-ssec.

Rehearsal and Minga were associated in a flutter over two furlongs, the first fast work they have done since their return to the active brigade, and they shaped very pleasingly in registering 24 4-ssec. for the quarter up the straight. Lady Hoariri was given easy pacework on the inside and then, with K. Chote in the saddle, slipped over three furlongs in 37 3-ssee. She is another locally-trained candidate who will appreciate the easy tracks. Golden Pam was given easy pacework with a brush up the straight, working well within herself. Amatory (K. Chote) was responsible for a very smart effort over seven furlongs, recording 25sec. for the initial quarter, 49 2-ssec. for the half mile, 1.2 1-5 for the five furlongs and 2.27 3-5 for the full distance. This is as good a gallop over the distance as has been seen locally for some time.
