Interesting Racing Assured For Woodville To-day

With Sting Out the Goihg Should be Good Single-Pool Betting Although there are only four acceptors for the Kumeroa Handicap, the seventh event on the programme, good fields have been carded for the first day of the Woodville District Jockey Oluib’s autumn meeting, which opens to-day. After rain earlier in the weeh: the sting is out of the ground and the going should he perfect. The first race, the Maiden Plate, is timed to start at 12.15 p.m. and the betting will he single-pool.

Fourteen have been carded for the Maiden Plate, which will be decided over six furlongs. At time of writing the only scratching was Doctor Defoe. Jacynth, Stargono, Twilight Song, and Gay Hunting are the ones with placed performances but Bolling Home and Waterproof are likely improvers and Inheritance is another that should be capable of making a showing. Reducing it to three the betting may point to Gay Hunting, Twilight Song and Stargono. The second race as the Oringi Highweight. There are seven acceptors including Twilight Song who is also paid up for in the Maiden Plate. The top weight is Parry, who won at Pahiatua, and further down is Camilla Horn, who ran two good races at the same meeting, being second to Parry in one of them. Contact and Southern Blood will have to be taken on trust but Royal Romance won over hurdles at Hawera. Taking a line through the race at Pahiatua, the public may go most strongly for Camilla Horn, Parry and Royal Romance. The Woodville Handicap is the third race on the card and it is timed to start at 3.35 p.m. There are eight acceptors and they have all got a chance. Siegmund has pride of place with 8.9 and if he were to reproduce the form he showed last month he would be very hard to beat. Master Cyklon won the Pahiatua Cup and if the race is run to suit him he should again be in the firing line when whips are drawn. Hunting Cat has twice been in the money recently, one of the races being the Summer Handicap at the Wellington Cup meeting. Francis Drake will be on his home course and his breeding suggests that the distance will not be too far for him. Pladie won on the second day of the Pahiatua meeting and a repetition of that form should make him a possibility to-day. Roaming reached his top form at Christmas time and freshened up, he would have to be considered. Old Surrey has been working well at Awapuni and his second to Wildflower over nine furlongs at Marton will bring him into the bidding for this race. Last but not least is Terry, who was a close second to Wildflower in the Ashhurst Cup. There is material for a great race and the issue is as open as it could be. The favourites, howeveh, may be Hunting Cat, Francis Drake and Pladie. Eight * 4 youngsters ’ ' have been accepted for the Sapling Stakes and the winners engaged are Cherry Plum, Lady Furst, Twenty Grand, and Dunmanway, and Brazie and Segra have been in the money. The punters have plenty of form to help cloud the issue and, in addition, several of the two-year-olds have yet to show their best. Three that should command a strong following are Lady Furst, Dunmanaway, Cherry Plum. There are nine acceptors for the President's Handicap, a seven furlong race for hacks. Earl Colossus, the topweight, has been in the money four times recently and he should be due to go one better. Bluffer has yet to do herself justice but she has been working well and she looks well. State Bank has had a couple of races and he should be improving. Rockingham can gallop and he must not be left out of calculations because of a run of “outs.” Tommy Atkins has been consistently good for some considerable time and he can be expected to take some beating to-day. Merryman makes most appeal of those further down the list. The public may go for Earl Colossus, Tommy Atkins and Rockingham. The scratching of Joviality has reduced the sprint field to six and there is a possibility that Siegmund will start in the Woodville Handicap. Passion Fruit won two races at Pahiatua and in his last three starts Slippery recorded a win, a' second, and another win. Kakikatoa raced well at Pahiatua and he was in the money in each of his last three races. Hatuma has not raced for some weeks but he can gallop. Recent form suggests that the betting may favour Slippery and Passion Fruit. There are only four horses in the Kumeroa Handicap and the public might elect to go most strongly for Maestro and Tullamore. The biggest field of the day will parade for the concluding event, the County Handicap, which will be fought out over six furlongs. Recent winners are Mea Mea, Alloa, Conver sion and Trebor, but Sardius, Son and Heir, Joe Louis, Quexona and Rowana have been in the money. It should be a good betting race with a fair price obtainable about any horse and the favourites may be Conversion, Mea Mea, and Alloa.
