Wellington Wool Sale

BROKERS’ REPORTS

N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY CO.

Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report on Wednesday’s wool sale at Wellington as follows: —Our quota was 30OU bales. There was a full and representative bench of buyers, who competed keenly, but under very restricted limits; the main competition coming from Continental and Bradford buyers, but Dominion mills and Canada were also in the market. From the outset it was apparent that buyers were operating on reduced limits, and while super wools can bo quoted as firm, ordinary topmaking sorts showed a drop of about a half-penny per lb for crossbreds; but top-making Merinos and halfbreds showed a slightly greater depreciation. The wool opened up in poorer condition than usual, this being accounted for largely through the adverse weather conditions experienced during the winter and early spring, but many clips were spoiled through not being skirted. Wool, like many other commodities, is gradually easing, caused largely through the unsettled economic conditions throughout the world, and it is difficult to say when conditions will improve and prices may still go lower before any improvement takes place. Passings were fairly heavy owing to growers’ reserves being above present market values. Comparing prices with those ruling at the previous Wellington sale, halfbreds and Merinos can be quoted 2d to 3d per pound lower, and crossbreds from Id to lid lower. The following are some of the prices realised:—
