Wanganella’s Battle With Gale
40 HOURS CF TROUBLE IN TASMAN Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night, Fighting a head on gale for 40 hours the Wanganella, which left Sydney about midnight on Saturday, had one of the roughest Tasman crossings in its history and certainly the roughest for some years. Instead of reaching Auckland on Wednesday morning the vessel did not arrive until shortly before noon to-day. Almost throughout the storm the Wanganella did little more than keep her nose to the wind and her greatest speed for that time was scarcely more than five knots. Even at that slow pace the ship was awash forward almost continuously, and at one stage part ol the dgek cargo of oranges stowed for ward broke loose.
