Traffic-light Dodgers
Drastic action to secure greater road safety is being urged on Mr Hore* Belisha, Minister of Transport. Glasgow Corporation Streets Committee is asking him to seek powers to fine pedestrians for ignoring traffic signals. Bailie Cochrane, of Glasgow, said: “1 am convinced the public would develop road sense more rapidly if they knew they were liable to be lined eveu a modest sum for scampering across tho road when tho lights were against them. ” The Ministry of Transport Advisory Committee is considering legislation to compel cyclists to conform to the road code. Whether it will recommend that cycles be numbered or that riders should undergo tests is not yet known. Official analysis of road accidents shows that pedestrians cause 28 per 'cut. and cyclists ID per cent.
