“Lost” Tomb Hides Bier of King’s Secret Wife

All traces of the tomb in which beautiful Mrs Fitzherbcrt, morganatic wife of George IV was buried in the church of St. John the Baptist, Bristol road, Brighton, 100 years ago, have vanished. Sextons removed flooring at the spot where her vault was believed to be, sounded the walls and monuments in vain. A wreath composed of daffodils and carnations was delivered at the presbytery to be placed beneath the monument. It bore a card reading: “In honoured memory of a great lady, Maria, Mrs Fitzherbcrt. These flowers, sent on the centenary of her death, are a tribute from a great-grandniece and great-great-grandnephew of Dorothea Lady Knighton.’*
