Government Housing Scheme. When the question of the Government housing scheme came up lor discussion, Air Hunter, in enlarging on ms theme that tho local bodies should gi/e the Government more liberal assistance than they had been doing, said that they could have assisted the Government ana themselves by taking up the housing seneme more extensively. The Government ohered them money at 3£ per cent, little dreaming that the scheme would meet with anything but universal appeal, and they were astonished to find mat some of the local bodies we,-o afraid to aecepc the offer. The erection of between 12 and 20 houses in Foxton would be a noon, especially if the flax industry continued to grow, and he believed it would. He sincerely hoped that the local body would take up this scheme and remedy tne position. If not it had everything to lose as single men would come nere to work but would reside elsewhere. The Alayor (Air AI. E. Perreau): But the Government decided to build the houses in Palmerston North and elsewhere. Why not here? Mr Hunter stated that the Government decided to start its scheme where most needed, in the cities. Eventually it wmuld build houses ia tne small towns but it ensidered that the local bodies, being the governing authorities, would look after their own interests and those of the small towns when the offer of cheap money was made. It would be a long time before the Government could get the whole scheme undir way. Air Perreau said that a number of houses had fallen nack on the Government in Foxton and as a result tho local authority got no rates. Discussion finally terminated on this subject with an expression of hope by Mr Hunter that the Foxton Borough Council would see fit to alter its mind in regard to the housing scheme. General. Air Hunter intimated that the Minister of Railways had promised him that a rail car would be put on the Foxton-Palmers-ton North line as soon as the Department’s present requirements in this connection had been complied with. Air Hunter also stated that it was intended to plant 300,000 trees at Wairarere this season. The work was being undertaken by the Public Works Department.
