Women’s Christian Temperance Union
The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held yesterday afternoon, when “White Ribbon” day was celebrated. Vases of pink chrysanthemums and large bows of white crepe paper brightened tho room for the occasion. After the usual devotional exercises, Mrs. Scott gave a short account of the “White Ribbon” paper, and showed how from a small beginning it had now over 3000 subscribers. Three new members were initiated. Two vocal solos were pleasingly rendered by Mrs. A. Bird, her accompanist being Mrs. G. Stout. A very interesting and helpful reading was given byMrs. J. F. Clausen, the title being ‘ ‘ Preach and Scrub. ’ ’ Two competitions formed part of the programme, a prize being given for one, the winner being Mrs. A. Bird, while the second competition was won by Mrs. Pullyn. Reference was made by the president, Mrs. Carter, to two members who were ill, Miss M. Moore and Mrs. W. MeConnon. The prayers of those present were asked that they might soon be restored to health and strength. It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to each. Pleasure was expressed that Mr. W. Ritchie, who had been in hospital, was now so far restored to health as to have returned home. * Regret was expressed by the president at tho passing of Viscount Snowden, who had always been such a staunch supporter of prohibition. A cause of rejoicing was the recent carrying of prohibition in the State of Oklahoma (U.S.A.) by a large majority. The meeting closed with the Benediction.
