A Jolly Birthday Party Tendered to Old Makino Residents

On reaching the great age of 81 years Mr William Reid, a* farmer In Makino for fifty odd years, and now living a more retired life in his town house,

"Tasma” Denbigh Feilding, was tendered a jolly birthday party by his family on Saturday, May 29. A large number of relatives and friends were present. The evening took the form of a euchre tournament, there being not one dull moment, and spirit of jollity, and good humour prevailing throughout. At the conclusion of the tournament, Mrs W. E. Baker presented the prizes, Mrs A. H. McNae being the winner oi' the ladies’ first prize, and Mrs J. Simpson the consolation. The men’s first prize was presented to Mr Wallace Beid, and the consolation to Mr Mervyn Beid. Items contributing to tho evening’s pleasure were given by the following:—Fay Sunnex (recitation); Winnie Huddleston (tap-dance); Caryll Beid (recitation); Lottie Baker (songs); Alvin Sunnex (recitation). A sumptuous supper provided an interlude in the proceedings. The handsome birthday cake made by Mrs D. W. Beid, and Miss May McNac, was iced and decorated by Mrs Val Reid. Being coronation month the cake was decorated with flags and a gold crown being placed on the top decor, this particular piece of artistic work being much admired. At. a suitable juncture, Mr T. . Glen, in a happily worded speach conveyed the good wishes of all present to the guest of honour, his health being drank with musical honours. Mr H. Robinson then spoke on behalf of the Reid family, Mr D. W. Beid replying. On behalf of the family, an opportunity was then taken by Mrs D. W. Beid to express appreciation and thanks to Mr and Mrs Val Beid for their untiring and kind services to their father at all times. Before replying to the many good wishes, and thanking his family and friends for the numerous and useful presents bestowed to him, the guests of honour presented his daughter-in-law, Mrs Val Reid with a small gift, showing his appreciation for her kindness to him in many ways. Little Caryll Reid was also a recipient of a small gift from her grandfather. Members of the family present were:— Mr and Mrs D. W. Reid, Mr and Mrs W. E. Baker, Mr and Mrs H. Reid, Mr and Mrs W. Reid, Mrs Q Simpson, Mr and Mrs W. Huddleston, Mr Vic Reid, Mrs F. Howell, Mr and Mrs Val Reid. Others present were:—Mrs H. Palmer (Hukanui), Mr and Mrs G. Sunnex (Hukanui), Mrs S. J. Reid (Lower Hutt), Mr and Mrs E. Bennett (Palmerston North), Mrs G. Baker, Mr and Mrs T. Thomas, Mr and Mrs P. R. Simpson, Mrs A. H. McNae, Mrs L. Hicknock, Mr and Mrs T. E. Thurston, Mr and Mrs V. Thomas, Mr and Mrs D. W. R. Baker and Misses L. Baker, I. Simpson, B. Thurston, Messrs A. Reid, T. Glen, I£. Robinson, T. Waugh, J. Simpson, N. Huddleston, A. Baker, W. and I. Reid and many young grandchildren.
