Wanganui Winter Meeting Opens To-day

Great Fields are Carded for Interesting Programme

Betting will be Single-pool

Tht Wanganui Jockey Club’s popular winter fixture is due to open to-day and fine weather is all that is required to make the meeting a most enjoyable one both for the club and racing enthusiasts. Though rain has fallen daring the week it is unlikely to have made any appreciable difference to the course, which provides what is probably the finest winter going in New Zealand. The first event is timed to start at noon; the betting ia single-pool; and the acceptances are particularly good. Exciting racing can be confidently expected and a short review of the fields is as under:—

The programme will open with the Puma Hack Hardies and the winner of the hurdles at Foxton-Bed Manfred, is at the head of the handicap. Bed Manfred ’s Foxton effort was so good that he is likely to be the favourite to-day. Ethiop ran a creditable second and a repetition of that form will make him very hard to beat. Hunting Queen is capable of upsetting calculations, also Petrarch, who won the Steeples at Foxton. The betting may point to

Ked Manfred and Ethiop. The W inter Oats, the open sprint, is the second race, and a good finish is anticipated. Hen Hraggie (9.12) is topweight, and his brilliance should stand »in. iu good stead on this course. Noli urn and Gold Mission should be reudy to give of their best, also Tonncrro, while Holaria, fit and well, is another quite capable of running out a aolid six furlongs. Hunting Lodge and Moatoa are others likely to figure in the finish so that the betting should be widely spread. Beducing it to three, the public may go most strongly for

Gold Mission, Ben Br aggie and Xffotium.

The Century Hurdles, over two miles and 191 yards, is likely to prove a bit Of a puzzle to the punters, for & very good field will parade. Clarion Call has been jumping brilliantly, and Journet showed at Hastings that he is not far from his best form. Bu&form will be all the better for his race at Foxton, also Contact, John Charles and Bed Rufus, while Beau Gallante may improve on his fourth to Bed Manfred, Ethiop and Contact. The other two are Brigadore, who was third twice at Biccarton at Easter, and Sporting Song, who has done all that has been asked of him recently. Sporting Song, however, is an acceptor for the Steeples. It should be a great race with & good price obtainable about any of therm. The betting may point most strongly to Clarion Call, Journet and Sporting Bong or Brigadore. There are l(i acceptors for the B&l----gownie Hack, which will be fought out over a distance of a mile and 110 yards. The South Islander, Dictate, and Brazen King are at the head of the weights, and they should prove capable of making bold bids for victory. The majority of the field have recent form and the betting is sure to take a wide range with Myriam, Airing, Hunting Maid, Lady Siegfried, Corowa, The Sandwich Man, Mahaanui,* Galteemore, Spender, Eara and Naughty Mariette all having good credentials. To reduce it to three, the public may go most strongly for Brazen King, Dictate ami Airing. The Grandstand Steeplechase is next and the distance is about 2$ nii-.es. Bonnie Bollox was a bit of a disappointment at Egmont Dut his Australian form was so good that he cannot be left out of calculations to-day. Kiotous, who has won two steeplechases on the course, has been schooling well and Sporting Bong’s recent form nas been so good that he must be given a great chance in this race. Boyal Ban quet*i second to One Whetu at Foxton indicates he is fit and if he safely negotiates the country he should be capable of figuring in the finish. Of the others, Platter, after his second to Petrarch in the Steeples at Foxton, will probably find most favour. Well-backed horses may be Sporting Song, Blotous and Platter. There are 17 acceptors for the Empire Handicap, and Bed Manfred, Boyal Banquet and Solaria, have been pain up for in earlier events. A great race is indicated. Fiealand, T&itoru, Pukeko and Master Cyklon head the list and the favourite is likely to be one of these. Bed Manfred and Boyal Banquet ran particularly well at Foxton and if reserved for this event they will not be without friends. Others likely to play a prominent part are Gay Boy, Mandamus, International, Le Grand and Davistock. The issue is very open but the favourites may be Friesland, pukeko and Gay Boy. The day’a programme will conclude with the Borough Hack and another big field will parade. Dictate, if reserved, Flying Chief, Taro and Airing head the list and all will command respect. Botoma went well over a longer distance at Foxton, while Mahaanui, Bace Call, Parakino, Fleeting Arrow and Malibu are all capable of figuring in the £nish. The betting may point to Flying Chief, Airing and Taro. WAVING STEEPLECHASING A LIFT A few months ago an American syndicate subscribed a little over £SOO each for the purchase of 3(5 jumpers in France aud England. On arrival, the horses were drawn for, each member of the syndicate obtaining one. The horses did not cost quite as much as anticipated, and from the £19,200 about £2BOO remained. So a steeplechase subscription committee arranged a series of five steeplechases for the imported horses, the committee endowing each to the extent of £4OO and racing associations adding £2OO to each race.

GREAT BEVENUE FROM BETTING Horses and dogs gave the State of Florida a great revenue this year. Parimutuel betting at the recent horse meet- ( ings at Hialeah Park and Tropical Park ' meetings totalled £6,138,000; and the turnover at the ten dog tracks was a little over £3,748,000. From the horses the State received £217,312 in betting tax, and from the dogs approximately £143,500. The betting increase as compared with the corresponding period last year was 11,295,515 dollars (approximately £2,259,103), which is a remarkable advance over a few months* horse and dog racing. GOOD STAKES IN DURBAN For the nine days of the Durban Turf Club’s winter season the prize-money totals over £36,000, the principal races being the Durban July Handicap, of £6OOO, 1£ miles, and the Durban Gold Cup Handicap, of £2500, 2 miles. Tho various two-year-old races are confined to horses bred in South Africa. An interesting condition attached to the principal handicaps is that horses left in after the final acceptance will not be permitted to be subsequently scratched without an explanation satisfactory to the stewards. The cost of starting for the Durban July Handicap is £4O.

All the races are to bo run at tracks in the State of New York, Saratoga getting two, and Belmont Park, Pimlico, and Acqueduct one each. No entry or starting fees will be charged, and winners become ineligible for the remainder of the series.
