Young Farmers’ Club

ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONFERENCE

From July 5 to July 10, delegates from Young Farmers’ Clubs throughout New Zealand are to assemble in Palmerston North for a “week” for which a comprehensive programme of lectures on agricultural topics and visits to institutions has been arranged. This conference, a new venture in the Young Farmers’ Club movement, promises to bo a big affair entailing much organisation. Yesterday, the district committee of the Young Farmers’ Club met with representatives of various city organisations to make final arrangements. Mr. 11. J. Lancaster was in tho chair.

Mr. J. Ilodgens, M.P., and the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr. A. E. Mansford) forwarded apologies for absence as well as Mr. J. A. Russell (president of the Manawatu A. and P. Association) and others. Subsequently Mr. Hodgens arrived and gave an assurance that he would do everything possible to assist in the promotion of the Educational Week.

Mr. Lancaster expressed pleasure at the way tho various city organisa tions wero getting behind the conference. It was known 290 young farmers would bo present and there were seven clubs yet to be heard from so that there was every prospect of well over 300 being present. Mr. C. J. Hamblyn also emphasised the importance of the conference week and tho work of tho Young Farmers’ Clubs. He had no doubt that the conference would be a success and the week would be a demonsiration to the youth of the district what the club;* could do.

Mr. J. A. Nash reported that the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce had decided to assist financially with the social and dance to be held on the Thursday evening with the co-operation of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and Y.W.C.A.

Mr. L. S. Plimmer reported that arrangements for the function W'cre well in hand and it would be held in the A. and P. Hall with car parking facilities at tho Showgrounds. Various women ’a organisations had been written to drawing attention to tho function and it was hoped the young ladies would bo present in large numbers. At the moment it was too early to expect any replies as to how many would actually attend. Mr. Plimmer urged the setting up-of a composite committee to take details in hand.

Mrs. Field, speaking 'on the question of supper, said tho Women’s Division had run a social evening when the girls’ educational week was field and it had been a success. She thought a similar appeal for this occasion would meet with equal support.

It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mrs. Field, Mr. Plimmer and Miss llindle (Y.W.C.A.) to co-opt assistance from tho Women's Division, Women’s Institutes and YAV.C.A.

Mr. G. G. Priest reported that the Rotary Club would assist with transport and Mr. H. It. D. Browne (service officer) said the Automobile Association would be offering similar assistance. Mr. R. Abraham said the Merchants’ Association would have cars available aud be prepared to help in any other direction.

Mr. J. Ryan detailed requirements needed at the showgrounds where the young men would be quartered and he stressed the health aspect. Something along military lines would be successful. Mr. Galpin reported that Mr. Ryan had offered to take over the initial discipline of the camp and inspectional work. Mr. P. G. Cope, on behalf of the Farmers’ Union Insurance Coy., offered a shiold for competition and was thanked. Comprehensive Programme. Voss’s property, Karero (demonstration, Romney sheep), and Mr. J. Callesen’s property (pedigree white clover seed area). Alternative (for members interested in latest development in mole-drainage), demonstration by Mr. B. McLeod, Colyton, of old and new methods of mole-drainage. Afternoon, visit to Massey College, (a) Tour of College property by cars; (b) party to divide into sections and inspect (1) sneep farm, wool demonstration (Mr. Waters) and intensive grazing trial (Mr. A. W. Hudson); (2) dairy farm; (3) piggeries; (4) poultry farm. Evening, social and dance.

Phillips’s property, Marton (a practical demonstration of high carrying capacity made possible by the application of certain farm management).
