New “Garden of Eden”

BARRACKS TOR SOLDIERS New barracks to be built in. the Suez Canal area, on the banks of the Bitter Lake, are to be the last word in modernised military comfort. They are to be occupied by the British who evacuate Cairo and other garrison stations in Egypt. Six blocks of barracks will be erected in the Canal zone, and the plans are to be in the charge of Brigadier H. N. North, the Royal Engineers ' constructional expert. They will be as unlike the old type of barracks as possible. They will be rather a township of “solriers' villas,'’ with all the monern comforts of the latest bungalows, and ssrrounded by trees and gardens.

It is the official intention to make a “Garden of Eden" in the sandy areas where the troops will have to live. A special landing dock is to be let into the Canal side. This will allow troops to be moved by ship direct to their barracks, and will save embarking and disembarking at Port Paid.
