COUNCIL’S ESTIMATES FOR THE COMING YEAR Following lengthy consideration in committee at a recent meeting, the Palmerston North City Council on Monday night adopted its estimates for the coming year. Some of the major items from the general account are as follow:

Expenditure. Dr. balance April 1, 1937: £3676 2s 6d. Purchases: Asphalt, £300; sand, £SO; tar and bitumen, £1500; metal and blinding, £1000; depot store* £1000; repairs plant and replacement of tools, £3OO. Streets maintenance: Wages, £3750; materials, £2250; rolling and carting, £7OO. Watering and sweeping: Sweepers’ wages, £962. Depot: Wages, £426; power, £9O; sundries, £l5O. Stables: Wages, £75; horse-feed, £200; shoeing and sundries, £BO. Road rollers: Wages, £200; fuel, £75; repairs and maintenance, £IOO. Motor lorries: Wages, £820; fuel, £350; repairs and maintenance, £250. Tractors and trailers: Wages, £535; fuel, £330.

Street lighting, £3OOO. Footways: Wages, £1000; material. £750; kerbing and channelling, £IOO. Sewer maintenance: Wages, £500; material, £3CO.

Traffic expenses: Wages and salaries, £800; upkeep car and cycle, £120; cycle stands, £6O; street marking, £9O. Bridges and drainage: Fitzherbert bridge approaches (propn.), £100; lower Gorge bridge maintenance, £25; Kawau drain, £300; Fox ton line drain, £7O; Koehler’s drain, £3O; Jamieson’s drain, £3O; Lovelock’s drain, £2O; Mangaone stream, £2O; stormwater drainage, £927. Miscellaneous: Insurance (accident), £450; private crossings, £250; telephones, £24; street names and house numbering, £300; Boundary road, £l5O.
