Candidates for Foxton

TIMES COMPARATIVELY SLOW IN HEAVY GOING AT AWAPUNI Except for a light fog which at times made it impossible to clock horses passing the half mile and the three, the weather was delightful for track work at Awapuni yesterday morning, with chief interest was centred in horses with engagements at Foxton. The course proper was available for fast work but the going was dead and times comparatively slow. The flags were out in the middle of the course. Among the first to work were Chat (R. Chisholm) and Cloudy Bay (W. J. Broughton) and their task was one of seven furlongs. They were not much under the 15 to the furlong and they were together until well into the straight. Cloudy Bay then drew out and won fairly comfortably. The time* was 1.38 3-5. Dawning Light (W. J. Broughton) was sprinted six furlongs with Hunting Lodge (G. Tatter sail). Dawning Light got a shade the better of the start but Hunting was never far away and she had it on Dawning Light over the last bit. The time was a fraction under 1.2(5 and it was a satisfactory trial by both. Dawning Light is engaged in the Himatangi Hack on Saturday and Hunting Lodge in the Kebbell Memorial. Jim Coyle's two candidates, Round Score (G. Tattersall) and Gay Boy (Broughton) were galloped a mile. The pace was not on in tho early part and both horses were pulling very hard. Round Score was about half a length to tho good at the half mile which was reached in a little better than even time. Gay Boy was practically on terms at the home turn but fifty yards from tho post Round Score looked a likely winner. Gay Boy, however, had plenty in reserve and he made what looked to be an effortless dab which gave him the verdict by a head. The time was 1.55 and it was a nice work but with Gay Boy finishing very smoothly. Aurora’s Love (Broughton) scampered over five furlongs in 1.8 4-5, and it was not a bad effort.

Taumau (P. Rae) and Petrarch (A. McDonald) were sent over a round of the schooling fences and both jumped well.

Bold Bruce (Tattersall) was worked over a mile but galloped only the last three which occupied 41 2-5. Tail Light (N. Voitre) and Happy (Broughton) sprinted six furlongs in 1.25 1-5.

Tangled (L. Parkes) and Lactose (A. McDonald) were sent over the country, both well, their task being a couple of brush fences and a post and rails. Stargono (Tattersall) galloped a mile, the last six furlongs of which took 1.28. Sporting Gift (Broughton) was sprinted five furlongs, and expected to pick up Antrim Beauty (P. Rae) at the half mile. The latter went away a bit too soon and Sporting Gift was still three lengths behind when they turned for home. Sporting Gift, who is a pretty smooth galloper, then drew level and went on to win fairly easily. Sporting Gift's time for the full distance was 1.13. A number of two-year-olds were worked, and three of them, The Beau PereHelen colt, the Pombal-Episode colt for which Mr Ralph Lowry gave 200 guineas, and the Beau Pere-Sahara filly, were sprinted down the straight. Tho name, Sedan, has been claimed for the Beau Pere-Sahara filly, and Screen Lord for Movie Star's brother. Foxton Biding Engagements Riding engagements for Foxton have been announced as under:— W. J. Broughton: Gay Boy, Hunting Lodge and Dawning Light. G. R. Tattersall: Round Score and Stargono. C. Thomson: Petrarch. S. Anderson: Iddo, Gala and Eara.

HAWKE’S BAY HORSES FOR FOXTON FAIRLY STRONG TEAM ‘‘The Barb'* makes tho following comment about Hawke's Bay horses which will race at Foxton on Saturday: “The two recent races Contact had at Hastings have brought him back to Ho-mt thing like his best form and he should soon put up a bold showing if judged by his schooling the other morning in company with Red Rufus. The latter is more or less always sore, but is otherwise in excellent order. Ho ifc also improving in his jumping. “John Charles has been giving brilliant displays of hurdling of late at Greenmeadows and will keep the best hot under tho collar on Saturday, though he may require a race to be in his best form. At any Tate, John Charles will not be long ere he is on the winning list again. He looks fortunate in getting in at 41bs. less than Contact, as he has won more- hurdle races than the Cockpit gelding, and has scored at Riccarton.

“Sir Nigel appears to have benefited somewhat by his two races earlier in the month. He will contest the sevenfurlong open event at Foxton and then go on to Wanganui. There he will be tried over a middle distance and it will not be surprising to see him taken an active part in the decision of the Connolly Handicap. “Helios may be one of G. W. B. Greene's team for Foxton. This Colossus gelding has been disappointing, having won only one race and that at Foxton about 12 months back. “It was recently reported that in the Hawke’s Bay Cup Passion Flower had run her last race, and was to be retired to the stud. However, Mr. Nelson has now modified the decision thus communicated by him to the writor and his maro is to be kept in training until after the Napier and Hawke’s Bay meetings.'' OTAUTAU ACCEPTANCES.
