TRANSFORMERS CATCH FIRE AT BUNNYTHORPE

Severe Electrical Storm Dislocates Power Service STORAIY CONDITIONS PREVAIL. A severe electrical storm, reaching its greatest intensity a short distance from the Bunnythorpe sub-station of the Manawatu-Oroua Electric Power Board, caused a temporary dislocation of the power service shortly before 5 o’clock. The lightning arrestors failed to cope with the abnormal discharge, with tho result that six oil transformers caught fire and were partly damaged before the switch dropped. Fire also broke out within the sub-station itself. The operator was able to extinguish tho blaze by means of a portable lire extinguisher, after which he restored the current supplying the district and Palmerston North. The stormy conditions which prevailed throughout the district yesterday continued during the night, heavy hail showers occurring at intervals, forcibly reminding citizens that winter had definitely arrived. Lightning accompanied by heavy thunderclaps was very marked and these conditions extended into Southern Hawke’s Bay.
