“Gold Diggers of 1937” Gay Extravaganza

POWELL-BLONDELL TEAM GIVES WHIRLWIND PERFORMANCE (Regent: Screening Soon). In a happy burst of song, dance and laughter, the “Gold Diggers" have arrived again in the 1937 edition of the famous screen show. The newly-wedded couple, Dick Powell aud Joan Blondell, ar% whirled gaily through story an<| song, and as the stars of the film the appeal of their performances is again strong. A new and likeable young figure 'M Lee Dixon, whoso carefree nature and brilliant tap-dancing are thoroughly enjoyable features of the show. Bright songs are introduced by Powell in iiis inimitable style: “Speaking of liie Weather," and “Let’ Put Our Heads Together" are among the most attractive. In the concluding stages tho scene of the film moves to the stage of a theatre, and here lavishly beautiful dance ensembles are presented. \ rocking-chair number, staged on a polished floor, and another carried out with waving silk flags, are strikingly effective. True to name, the film beings almost ut once with the activities of “gold diggers," when a party of hungry chorus girls use their most innocent wiles on members of an insurance convention returning by train from Atlantic city.
