Wanted to Fight Guard

MAN ARRESTED FOR OBSCENE LANGUAGE ON TRAIN

Leonard White Gordon McKenna, a labourer, 63 years of age, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., on three charges: Being drunk on the Shannon Railway Station on March 31, using obscene language in a railway carriage proceeding to Shannon, and assaulting Peter Oag. *T am certainly sorry; I don’t remember," said accused in pleading guilty to the three charges. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre said the case was particularly bad of its kind. Owing to accused behaviour, and the fact that he was using obscene language, the guard had to be called into the carriage at Longburn. Accused struck several blows on the face of a passenger who remonstrated with him about his language, which was such that ladies and High School boys had 1 to leave the carriage. Accused wanted to fight the guard and tried to strike him, and was taken to the guard’s van, but while the guard went away on his duties accused returned to the carriage and continued his conduct. He was taken to the van again, placed in charge of the assistant guard, and, on the arrival of the train at Shannon, was handed over to the police. He had a lengthy list of previous convictions, including four for using obscene language. Accused was fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment, for using obscene language, was similarly punished for the assault, and fined 5s in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness.
