Bankers’ Tennis Tourney
MIDLAND CUP WON BY TORRENS AND HILL. Taking advantage of St. Patrick’s Day to dose their ledgers members ol the staffs of banks in Palmerston North, Wanganui, Wairarapa towns and elsewhere participated in a successful tenuis tournament at Linton street courts yesterday. The luncheon adjournment at the Roeco tea-rooms provided a pleasant break, thereafter play continued well on to 4 p.m. The main event was a doubles championship which was won by L. Torrens (Marton) and R. Hill (Palmerston North), the ruaners-up being J. H. Denby (Bulls) and E. H. Windley (Wanganui), who lost to the winners by 9 games to 5, in which the tennis was of a high standard. The consolation event went to M. R. Mansell (Bulls) and W. R. Allen (Palmerston North) defeated R. B. Darraw (Wanganui) and J. Bteele (Carterton) 9—B. At the conclusion of play, Mr A. F. Email, of Levin, presented the cup and prizes and in doing so made feeling reference to the generous acton of the Palmerston North Tennis Club in again | placing their courts at the disposal of i the bankers. He expressed thanks to | the Midlond Brewery Co., Ltd., for so generously donating the handsome cup for the main event. The players were thanked for ffceir support some having travelled over 80 miles to attend. The organising of the tournament was in the capable hands of Messrs F. Bull and Neil Hume.
