From Our Own Correspondent. Women’* Institute Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the Women’s Institute took place on Wednesday afternoon. In her annual report the retiring president. Mrs A. Griffith, thanked her committee, especially the secretary, for the great amount of help given her in carrying out her duties. She wished to thank all members for the harmonious mannerTrt which Institute affairs had always run. They had now a strong membership, but there was still room for more. On the motion of Mrs P. Danielson, a hearty vote of thanks to tho president, secretary and committee, was carried. Mrs S. Sorensen also proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs F. M. Bradley who was re tiring after serving on the committee since the formation of the Institute nearly six years ago. The balance sheet read by the secretary, showed a good account of the year s working, with a small credit balance. Mrs Griffith was presented witJi a posy by little Ann Stewart. Two new members proposed were Mrs Stone and Miss Betty Kearney. Mrs F. M. Bradley received a hearty vote of thanks for her account of the group meeting at Pohangina. A very interesting letter from the Institute’s link, Mooi River, South Africa, was read by Mrs F. Russell, and Mrs D. Johnston was chosen to reply t" it. On a vote being taken it was decide.l to carry on t.he flower competition (which expires in April) next year. Mesdames H. Swainson and P. 33anielson were chosen as delegates to attend the council meeting in April. The month’s blooms competition resulted: African marigold Mrs P. Danielson: French marigold. Mr? A. E. Wilkins; stock, Mrs A. Griffith aster, Mrs R. R. Tnit. The competitior, for the best article made from cardboard was won by Mrs B. Burnham (seniors) and Miss Joan Burnham 1. Miss M. The May meeting will be members' day. when the programme will be arranged by those not on the committee. Personal and General. Mr and Mrs I). Lewer motored to Marterton last week-end, and were the guests of Mrs Lewer’s sister and brotlier-in-law, Mr and Mrs D. Phillips. Mrs F. B. Cheetham has returned home after spending an enjoyable holiday in the Henderson distriet. North Auckland. Friends of the family will be sorry to hear little Ngaire Griffen is at present ill, and extend their good wishes. Mr P. Pedersen has returned liome after spending a few days with his daughter on Foxton line. Mr C. MeKinnin is at present on a visit to Australia. Potato digging is now in progress In the district. There is much blight and some complaints are to hand of potatoes, which are apparently good when dug, not keeping ln the sacks. This is attributed by some to the continuous amount of rain preventing crops from ripening. Tomato crops are also being affected, their keeping qualities being much below’ other seasons.
